ST. LUCIE COUNTY — One person was hospitalized after an unidentified white powder was found at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum on Tuesday morning, the St. Lucie County Fire District said.

The FBI is looking into the incident, which was reported at 9:55 a.m., Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said. Paramedics hospitalized a man, who was in good condition, as a precaution, she said.

FBI spokesman Michael Leverock said the substance was found inside a letter at the museum. Officials at the museum could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

The St. Lucie County Department of Health and the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office also responded to the museum, in the 3300 block of North State Road A1A, Fort Pierce.

Clint Sperber, deputy administrator for the Health Department, said members of his agency took a sample of the substance to a state laboratory in Miami for testing.

The museum incident was not the only one in South Florida on Tuesday morning involving white powder inside a piece of mail. Four people, including a fire-rescue worker, were hospitalized after powder was found at the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office. Officials said the letter containing the substance was opened in the mail room.

Hopefully, when the idiot responsible is caught, they'll spend the rest of their life in a nice federal prison.

Why a nice one? I think a horrible one is more appropriate. Maybe we could send him to Turkey on a trial basis to alleviate US prison overcrowding.

Here's hoping the powder was not harmful.
