The public shooting range in the Apalachicola National Forest will reopen on Nov. 12. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) closed the range on Aug. 11 for new construction, vandalism repair and general maintenance.
According to FWC’s Ed Poppell, assistant hunter education administrator, the agency has completed the second phase of construction. The range now includes a new pistol range bullet trap, sidewalks, numbered target stations, repair on the rifle range bullet trap and a new eight-foot concrete-filled block wall separating the rifle and pistol ranges for added safety.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer range safety officer can call Ed Poppell at (850) 413-7988 for information.
Poppell asks that range users report any vandalism to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at (888) 404-FWCC or *FWC for cellular phone users or contact the Leon County Sheriff’s Department.
