has anyone ordered the SA .308 ammo from AIM Surplus and have a range report. i would like to order 980 rounds or maybe more if it ends up being good stuff. i just burnt up the last of my .308 Port. and in my opinion that was pretty good ammo so i need a new supply of 308.
thanks
DJ

I shoot the shit out of it.  There have been some "issues" with some lots.  Specifically tar plugging up the chamber fluting on HK 91's and clones.  There are a couple of threads in the FAL section about this ammo.

I just ordered a bunch today.  It's been reliable and feeds well in my Imbel FAL

No worries, it's NOT from the same lot with the tar sealant everyone was bitching about.  I've shot approx 6k rounds from this batch of SA (all thru MG's) without any major issues.

What is that particular lot# so some of us can check our stash?

The lot I got from Aimsurplus is "026 B03/81"
The lot I bought locally here from Jensen Arms is "204W A11/80"

Neither lot has given me the dreaded tar lock up some have described.  I haven't shot thousands
of rounds of it but usually shoot 300 or more rounds when I go out.  The stuff functions in my
Genuine HK-91, CETME, PTRs and my M1A. At least the above lots have been ok for me.

Just posted some of this info on hk91.com.  I bought two cases of SA from AIM Surplus in Nov or Dec.  I am not home at this time, so I do not have the lot numbers in front of me, but one ended in 03/81 and the other in 11/81.   Both of these lots give a tar like residue in my PTR 91.  Another fellow posted a lot number ending in 07/81 as causing this tar also.  So maybe lots from 1981 are the problem.  I have notice that the residue sets up as my rifle cools down.  If I shoot for an extended session, the tar remains more liquid.  If I take a break from shooting, it seems to harden.  The ammo is accurate, but definitely for range use only.  I'll keep my Portuguese laid back for serious stuff.  By the way, I normally can get my rifle cleaned and ready for the next session in about 30-40 mintues.  I use the E&L Manufacturing breech brush, a .30 cal bore brush, and Hoppe's.  Hope this info helps some.
