Can i use .308 in a 7.62 stamped reciever?  I read somewhere that there are slight differences between the cartridges.  My guess is yes, but want to make sure before picking up some ammo on the way to the range tomorrow.

The markings on the reciever are irrelevant. What the barrel is chambered for is relevant.

Assuming a rifle chambered for 7.62NATO, so long as the head space is set to accommodate 308WIN or 7.62NATO, you can fire either cartridge.

Probably be advisable to stick with the standard .308 stuff.  No Hornady Light Magnum or Federal High Energy stuff.
