Quoted: Looked at the manual, do I really need a "special tool" to remove the buttstock?

You don't "need" the buttstock tool, but they are really inexpensive and the hassle of trying to use big screw drivers, cleaning rods, yada yada yada really aren't worth the trouble.
If you do opt to get the buttstock tool, while removing the buttstock, be sure to keep your hand over the end of the tool with slight downward pressure while you are removing the recoil tube nut lest the tool ,nut, and spring get launched into low earth orbit.
I would also recommend getting an extractor removal tool. It can be done without the tool, but again, for the money, it isn't worth the trouble. You could own and shoot that FAL for your entire lifetime and never need the extractor tool, but it is nice to have just in case.
