Just like the title states. Buying one tomorrow. Need your opinions on a 16" model over a 18" model.

I like shorter carbines usually, but am wondering if I am losing too much velocity by going down to 16".

Oh, and pics of your preference would be great.

TIA.

I had a nice little congo built off a DSA receiver...it was with an IMBEL 17.5" bbl...I really like short carbines as well, and I've found 18" to be about the best for me when it comes to 308's (my M1A Bush has the 18" bbl as well).  Go with the 18"...if you want to go shorter it's a simple gunsmith job down the road.

My Congo...

Comparison with 21" bbl DSA and StG...(yeah it's a crappy picture)

Go with the "18, you won't regret it.  My 18s are fun to shoot and fast on target.

I have a 16".  In hindsight, I shoulda left it at 18" and seen how I liked it.  Easier to cut off barrel than to extend it.  As far as velo., you aren't loosing that much.  SOmebody had chrono'd it, and you lose a couple hundred FPS by going down to 16 from 21.

BTW, the 16's do look pretty cool.

Here's a pic for ya.

18". Mine was cut down from 21. It originally looked like the center rifle in ROCK6s' lineup above ^
I cut it back, just behind the flashhider. It might actually be 17.5 or so.

another vote for 18"
if you're only going to have 1 that is
top-down: full length G1 & SA58, 18" para, 16.5" franky

Thanks a bunch guys. And great pics! I'm leaning heavily towards the 18".

Rock6, what kind of rear sight is on your Congo? And is it something that would be easy to replace on an STG58?

Tagged...  I am building a carbine and mine is going to have a 17-in bbl as I already got it cut and threaded...  I couldn't decide between the 16 and 18 so my choices were the typical AR-15 GET BOTH or debate this the rest of my life... so I went with the 17-inches

Nice looking FALs above...

As to the sight, I really like it it's by VOW.

It's an A2 type aperature, good addition if you're running iron sights, here's the link VOW Para sight

Edited to add DSA has one as well that's cheaper, but I'm not sure if it has the small/large aperature combo as the VOW...DSA Para Rear Sight

Another vote for 18." Youll get full powder burn and the velocity drop from 21 isnt much, and much handier than the full length + brake.
