A friend of mine has one and he bought it for $399 about a year or so ago.  I tried it out several times and its very accurate and reliable.  Unfortunately, I havnt seen any more for sale at gun shows.  It was one of those items that there were once plenty at shows (the going rate was roughly $399), and since he bought his, I havnt seen anymore.

That's a century gun, only one out of 120000 actually functions properly.  Your friend got lucky.

I believe the R1A1 is South African Imbel production. Good stuff if Century got it right. I doubt it.

actually R1A1 is a century monniker
the R1 was the african pattern P73's thinking of.
i'm not sure where P8 got his data but i'd guess that ratio's inflated by at least one or two
great buy if they work

Mine also functions perfectly as well.  Better than the 2 DSA's that failed from my NY crew.

A coworker and I each bought a Century R1A1.  His shot fine, mine wouldn't.  With either mag I had, it wouldn't always pick up a round.  I took it back and the second one's a champ.  But, I still had the extra mag that I bought at the time I bought the rifle.  When that mag is used, the rifle frequently fails to pick up a round.  But the other four mags work fine.  Makes me wonder if the two mags weren't the problem all along.
I dumped all four mags through it the other day and it got so hot I couldn't hold the forearm!  But what a blast!

The R1A1 is listed at or around $500-600 and some places have them discounted around 400-500. Either way I would go with an Entrepise FAL which IIRC are built with a STG-58 parts kit, they run for $699 I think and are considered close to the same quality as DSA dollar for dollar (imagine a $700 DSA FAL).

My R1A1 functions perfectly also. I was a little worried because of the horror stories people were saying about them but mine has yet to let me down.

I have fired several real R1's in SA and the real deal works just fine. They will not be selling them, unfortunately, since the new, "enlightened" government is now collecting and...supposedly...destroying them. They did, however, manage to find a few to send to the Hatians!
