Looks like a pretty good shooter from a mix of GI sourced parts. I think the most desirable HRAs are the ones with LMR barrels as the supposedly shoot very well. But certainly the SA barrel on yours will do fine and meet normal accuracy expectations.

Nice uncut op-rod and wartime barrel.
You could probably sell the op-rod for almost half of what you paid for the rifle and get an H&R replacement easily. |

DON'T Shoot it much...those uncut rods would fail at the sharp corner, leading to the "Cut" design as a fix, and later the generous radius relief on the later versions. Wish I could talk to him about it but he's no longer with us. The side of the reciever and the barrel have A LOT of exterior wear and tear. Would not be surprised if this one saw combat or at least some of the parts did. The stock does look in excellent shape despite a few gouge marks. Are other OP rods just drop-in? Or do they need fitting? |

They are interchangeable, and typically the later op-rods are a bit better as they aren't as worn. I would suggest getting on the CMP forums and browsing a bit their and seeing if you could get a fair appraisal and perhaps make a deal. You also appear to have a WWII trigger guard, and perhaps many of the parts in it are also WWII era. The trigger spring looks to be WWII as it has the "ears" on the plunger. Would have to look at drawings on other parts to confirm. I have a 1943 Springfield with similar parts that has been "forced" correct as I've added a few of the missing parts here and there, including a "cut" oprod. As you mentioned, it has a lot of wear and a little pitting under the woodline. Pretty good bet it was used in combat or at least was in theatre at some point in time. |

Early HRA's did use some SA parts but yours is a mixture and not original.
Op rod isnt worth that much but maybe couple hundred$$ depending if its flat or curved. What interests me is the stock, it has characteristics of a IHC Stock. Remove the stock, is there anything stamped in the barrel channel? May sure to properly grease her before firing, rifle looks dry. No need to buy so called high tech gun grease in little tubes. Automotive wheel bearing grease is cheap and is overkill to lube and protect the Garand |
