I know I hadn't. Until today.

The story I was told was that these were ordered by the US gov for south american countries fighting the war on drugs in the mid 80's. Only 2500 were built, and all were to have shipped out threw a dealer in FL, but he kept two. This is one.

Anyone know anything about this? Is the story true? I know I've never seen another one like it, but who knows if its true or not.

According to the SEI website, they will be building new ones in the near future.

Check with Ron Smith or Different, but I think all of the M14Ks built for export to Columbia were select fire weapons.

Ron has put the K on hold until further notice... it may pop up once again after SEIs new receivers hit the market.

I think he's feeding you a line trying to jack the price.
There were more than two available for sale in the USA. I remember seeing them wrote up in a couple magazines back in the 80's
I also believe that back then, Smith would build you one on your supplied Springfield m1a reseiver. I have no idea if any ever got built on springfield reseivers.

He won't sell it. I have no idea if the story is true or not, but I've never seen one for sale. The owner said he talked to the guy who worked on them when the .gov ordered them, but he thought all of them were shipped out. That's why I figured I'd see here if anyone knew anything about it. Coolest M1A/M14 I've ever seen.

Quoted:
He may have gotten two from a particular contract, but there were more than those sold stateside.   Also you'll find some of the conversions were marked LaFrance.  They are deifinately great weapons.

Really? Do you have any ideas on numbers that were made? Did they sell them state side for a long while? The owner of the shop has been working there sense 93, and he has never seen one before. Not that its saying alot, but he has been around a while and never seen them. He is big in the NFA world, gone to Knob Creek for years, etc, I would have thought he would have seen them before.

AFAIK, civilian sales of the M14K was from 1988 to 1990.  I know Smith Enterprise serial number 002115 is a M14K.

Good to know. Have you seen the rifle yourself? Does it have the same stock? I've seen the folding stocks, but not the one with the support arm on it.

From SEI's web site:

Sonja Sommers, vice president of Smith Enterprise, test fires
one of our M14K guns that she barreled and head spaced.

I have photographs of it and have corresponded with the owner.  He's the original buyer.  He purchased it in 1990.  It has the standard M14K stock.  Boyds' did make the standard M14K stocks for SEI.
