I frogged around a few years ago when CMP actually had a few of these rifle.  Waited too long and now they are no where to be found.

Fewer made, popular with the collectors because there are fewer made, tractor company, nobody is letting them go once they get a hold of one. I did like you and because I could not justify it at the time let them get away when the CMP had some. I also passed up on one at a gunshow a few years back for $700. Oh well, I will just have to fork out the bucks when I eventually find one.

I have the other 3 manufacturer's but for some reason, I thought I had all sorts of time to purchase the IH.  What a dumba$$.

This thread makes me glad I snagged a very nice IH receivered mix-master at a local gun show last year.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was a CMP service grade purchase...probably a Greek return by the looks of the nearly black park job on all the metal.

Guy was asking nine bills for it but I was able to talk him down to $850.00.  Thought it was a bit steep at the time but haven't regretted the purchase at all.

It was my first Garand, it likely won't go down in value and it's not for sale.

Best of luck in finding yours.  When you do, don't pass on it.  Buy it now!

Very few around, many IHC's were givin away as Military Assistance Aid many more were destroyed by the gov.

I bought 2 back then.  HeHe.  One was a almost new IHC but it wasn't correct.  I don't shoot that one much.

I got three from the CMP.  Back in "the day" all I did was put a "sticky" on my order asking for a Harvester and they'd show up.  All three are service grades, which if I remember right were $425 or thereabouts.  One is an RRAD rebuild which appears to have never been fired after rebuild and looks brand new, the other is another RRAD rebuild which saw considerable use after rebuild but is one of my best shooters, and the other is not rebuilt but in very nice condition.  Glad I got 'em when I did!

Enjoy  USGI SG from the CMP when they where $550.  Like new from rebuild on a 4mill gap letter receiver.  

I almost had to sell it a year ago at a gunshow.  I carried it around and could only get a $500 offer.  I passed and am glad I kept it.  It's my nicest M1.

My three IHCs.  L - R:  4.44mil SA/IHC Postage Stamp variation that came from the CMP, some armorer missed it completely and it came to me instead of going to auction, I restored it from basically a barreled receiver to what is now 99% correct; 4.53mil that I found at the Knob Creek MG Shoot last October, it has British import markings on it but was all correct save for the windage knob and trigger guard; 4.58mil I found at the Louisville, KY NGD show, also in last October, it was entirely correct save for the gas cylinder and front sight.

I am also glad I got one when I did. You just can't find them around here, either at gun shows or gun stores.

This one is a Blue Sky import but it has the original LMR barrel and is in excellent condition. Not all of the Blue Skys were bad guns. This "postage stamp" IHC is a terrific shooter.

My first DCM (then) M1 was an IHC, and I think I paid $265 for it.  Huzzah!

My second (still was DCM) was an M1D that my name came up on the lottery for.  Huzzah ^ 2!

I own a International Harvester M1 that I bought from Springfield Sporters Inc.,here in Pennsylvania,probably around 1991.I picked my rifle just because it had the best bore and crown/muzzle,it is a mismatch with other S.A. parts.I sent it to Fulton Armory of Maryland for a complete rebuild,F.A. replaced the gas cylinder,some other small parts,put all new walnut on it,reparkerized all of the metal.F.A. does real nice work,the rifle functions flawlessly,I will try to post photos later.Springfield Sporters does not even sell guns anymore,no more showroom,they just sell parts now,an end of an era.

I was up on the continental divide in Colorado quite a few years back on vacation with my roommate and we heard what sounded like a light plane flying through the valley. About ten minutes later a old International pickup came trundling up the road in low gear. Quite a few irritated drivers behind him but he was not going to have any problems getting wherever he was going.

Many of them went to Iran as aid to the Shah.  Many were sent as foreign aid to other countries as well.  I remember seeing one at the gunshow at the Santa Clara Co. Fairgrounds back in '84-a DCM M1 back when they were $121.00 and "one per lifetime".  Well, this thing was a rebuild, but was beautiful with it's zinc park finish, and red tigerstriped birch stock.  I told the old man (my father), "I hope I get an IHC when mine is deliverd".  Well, after I placed my order, I started to wish for an SA.  But then mine is delivered in 1985.  I'd come home from the Jr. College where I was attending, and took a short nap.  When I woke up, nobody was home, but a long package was standing up next to the door (my mom had signed for it).  DANG!  I took it out of the box, and lo and behold, an IHC rebuild, and butt-ugly at that.  It was rebuilt in '64 at Anniston AL, and the only IHC part was the receiver, everything else being SA-oh, except for the front sight base.  It had been well used since then.  I slowly rebuilt it with choice IHC parts, and even found a great SA barrel for it with the same dates as what came on my rifle, except it gauges new, and has not been peened on the splines.  I purchased a great G.I. birch stock for it (not red in color, not tigerstriped, but nice and unused, with that dry, unused look).  I love it.  Now, she's tight as a drum.  Ironically, the last four of the serial number is my MOS in the USMC.  At the time I received it, I was an 0311 in the reserves, and had no idea I'd ever leave the infantry for the armor field.  I guess the folks at the DCM knew something I didn't...

Keep looking.  Be patient-you'll find one that someone needs to offload because of money issues, then you'll have a great example of a post-war M1 Garand rifle.  If you look too hard, you'll never find one.  For some reason, it always works that way for me...      

Heads up on the IHC located in the EE. I am in no way connected to the seller; I just remembered this thread and thought I would help a fellow Garand collector out.

My IHC is a great shooter for a service grade rifle. Every  time I take it to the range it seems that everyone has to shoot a piece of farm equipment. It usually costs me double the ammo I'd planned to shoot but that's what if was made for.
