As stated, the hand guard should not be tight against the front of the receiver when it's pushed all the way forward. Also, the hand guard should not be tight against the barrel, nor the sides of the stock. Both of these conditions will cause flyers from upper hand guard tension on the barrel.
So, the only thing that keeps the hand guard from twisting is the front ears to front clip of the guard (often loose from the start), and again as stated, a dab of silicone under the rear of the hand guard against the top of the barrel to create a flexable pad that keeps the guard from rattling on the barrel is the trick to solve the problem.
Note: The same is true for the M1 Garand in regards to the front hand guard. You do not want the gas cylinder tight against the front band of the guard pushing it tight against the middle band . This will cause tension as the wood heats up and again, flyer City (read it should move a bit front to back).
