They are sold out now, but while they were selling carbine receivers they had over 400 Plainfield and Universal receivers in stock. I thought these commercial clones weren't used by the military. What gives?
 CMP carbine receivers. From the CMP website: The CMP has recently acquired a few hundred Carbine receivers. We do not have any complete carbines or complete barreled actions. The only items available are receivers. Some of the receivers still have the barrels attached, but all barrels are considered bad. They are bent, bulged, split, or have other major deficiencies. All of these receivers, to include the commercial non-military Plainfield and Universal, were transferred to the CMP by the the US Army. ETA apparently they (commercial brands) were sold to foreign armies and transferred back to America through the US Government. More info here.

Supplied as foriegn aid back in the sixties. Went thru official channels of some kind hence CMP could get ahold of them. Remember, in the sixties just about any carbine that could shoot was being sent to the rice paddies. When it came to issuing to other countries, chiefly in central America, they may not have had enough left. So Plainfield and Universal entered the picture.

Makes sense. It would be interesting to read documented accounts of their (commercial clones) performance in combat. Since these guns were sent as aid to foreign nations, wouldn't they have to meet some type of government standard? |

Could be stuff that was captured/confiscated too. Not everything the US Army turns over to the CMP is USGI issue.
