I have a nice birch tiger stripe stock that I am refinishing. Need some help here. Stripping, dent removal and sanding are done. Time for stain. I need advice from anybody that has done this before. I want to pull the best color out of the stripes, what stain and color did you use? Also, has anyone ever used a green stain to make a jungle/camo style stripe?
Need your advise. I want to stain soon. THANKS

Dude - if you put green stain on a tiger stripe M14 stock , somebody should beat you over the head with that stock. Just decide what kind of color you want and try it in an inconspicuous place. Stains are basically just variations/ combinations of red, orange, yellow, black and brown.

Here is the best stock refinishing "how to" page around. Johnny Reb's M14 Stocks As for "Green Stain"... well, my 14 year old daughter would like a Purple one and might like a green one. I think the novelty would ware off and you'llwish you had gone with a "Red Mahagony" or something like that. Good luck and have fun, Tony |

I am done with my stock. Followed Mr Rebs instructions. Came out ok. Will post a picture sometime. As per the green stock idea. I found one that some in fact made it into a green tiger stripped stock and it looked really cool. It looked just like the tiger camo bdu's that you can buy.

Post a few pics of your project, it doesn't take as much time as re-finishing it  !!I refinished a Garand stock that I stripped, lightened and applied the RIT Cocoa Brown. It turned the SOB RED !!!!! I was able to salvage it by applying two coats of RIT's Dark Brown. It turned out pretty nice all in all for an old STOCK. |

Here are some before and after pictures. Camera did no justice to the final product. The darker image is pre and the lighter is with the second coat of tung oil. I still need to wax and install the gun.

Nice job! From what I've heard with the tung oil it should darken more as the tung oil oxidizes. As Fred said, most likely that's all that was ever done to your stock before you got it, tung or BLO applied and aged over time (although I've seen reference to that some birch stocks by HRA and someone else were stained to look like walnut but that process was discontinued early in production). I hope my M1 stock comes out as nice. Your M14 stock has a lot more tiger to it than mine, I'm jealous! I'll post pics (unless I royally screw the pooch). SoS |

It does darken up a bit as it drys and soaks into the stock. It gets a bit darker and has a lot more shine after each coat of tung oil. It was a fun project. I removed as many of the dents as I could and decided not to fill in the little scuffs and scratchs. I wanted this old stock to have a little personality.

I just did a freds tiger stripe stock... heres the stain you use, it brings out the contrast between the dark and light stripes. Titanium trioxide is the stain, then use the finish of your choice, I used Tung oil, came out satin finish and awesome!
