Wood vs Synthetic

Which do you prefer ?

I Know the advantage of synth stock ( no warping etc ) and yes its arfcom so get both is expected, but which one ?

and if wood, birch or walnut ?

my current has synth and needs to be repainted. so one vote in the poll is for synth only because thats what I have and so I can view the poll results

Birch

It is Stronger and lighter than walnut

Works well with any application.

I like Walnut but then I only have ONE M1 A, If I had TWO I'd most likely get the other with Birch so I'd have dpmmn's other twins.

USGI Synthetic, you don't feel bad when you take the spray paint to it.
plus when you out in the damp, cold, wet, etc... it doesn't swell.
and very cheap from Freds, paint a few to match projected environs in your particular AO.

Also from what I have read, doesn't need to be bedded like is recommended for wood.

For looks I like walnut but for actual use the GI synthetic stock is the only
way to go.

I do swap stocks around though-right now I'm down to only one M1A but I own
4 different stocks.

Wood is nice

My M1 has Wood of course, very nice and, well it's the original thing and wouldn't look right in synthetic.

My M1A came with wood. It's nice too but for funcitonality I've swapped it out for a USGI synthetic which looks great, functional and very durable.

Wood, the thicker the better. Fiberglass stocks are too thin for me.

Soak the wood with several coats of pure tung oil and it'll be pretty damn waterproof.

Fiberglass for the competitive shooters,

Walnut for the collectors amoung us.

As the owner of a Scout-type model, I think you need to specify which configuration. For the short barreled M1As synthetic is the way to go for me. I prefer the full length ones to be wrapped in wood however.

Synthetic. I have had very poor luck with wooden stocks. With a synthetic, when I scratch/ding/scuff it, a few minutes with some sand paper and Krylon and all is square with the world again.

Plywood, has the look of a wood stock and is sealed in resin so its stable as syn. Best of both worlds.

Synthetic.

The AR is not organic*, and I kinda like the m14 that way.

* Ok, so maybe there are some polymers in the synthetic stock, which would be organic, but those are long dead dinos, so bite me.

Freds tigerstripe walnut for looks and a synthetic for knockabout use.My N.M. M1a came from the factory with a gorgeous tigerstripped N.M. contour walnut stock. To save wear and tear I bought a G.I. synthetic. Now I have 4 M14 types and they all have both a walnut and a synthetic matched to them.

Real guns have wood stocks.

From your choices, I'd go with Birch, though I really prefer laminnated wood.

Ya know, if the technology to produce them economically had been available in 1936, M1s would have had synthetic stocks. If that had happened, all of the "purists" would object to wooden stocks on Garands.

Synthetic, no doubt about it. No need to bed in the M14SE. The weight advantage should be kept in mind, too. Speaking of synthetic, I must try the JAE 100 some time this year.
