I heard a while back that a few semiauto USGI M14s were manufactured.  Is this true?  How many were made and who made them?  Interesting bar question came up at the club the other night.

How many, I don't know. I do know that they were made by H&R.

The only military contract for true Semi NM rifles was produced by TRW, Not HRA.

Since the TRW NM rifles could not be converted to full auto (built on true Semi Auto receivers), the military/CMP program was short lived, and further MN rifles were rifles built on full auto receivers (HRA receivers).


I don't remember the total amount produced, but will state that if you do have deep enough pockets to buy one of the TRW semi NM's, do make sure that it does come with the CMP paperwork to prove that it started it life as a semi receiver, and not built on a converted MG receiver.

Small numbers of M-14's were produced specifically for DCM Clubs (now CMP) These M-14's had their selector shafts welded and were stamped M-14M - as in Modified.  Those rifles were SN specific and the roster is maintained on the NFA register.   The GCA of 1968 effectively halted the practice since "Once a MG, always a MG..."
Actual numbers escape me right now, but they were very low - I'll have to check my records.

These are different from the NM rifles produced by SA & TRW.....

Three semi-auto USGI M14 receivers without a selector lug were made in 1962 by Springfield Armory.  The serial numbers are X500, X501 and X502.  Two were built into rifles and at least one made it to Camp Perry in the 1960s.

The M14 M and M14 NM rifles were permanently rendered semi-automatic by welding the select fire components.  Springfield Armory had converted 1009 M14 rifles to M14 M models (NSN 1005-00-678-9829) by June 30, 1963.  All the M14 M rifles were conversions.  PERHAPS some more M14 M models were done.  After November 22, 1963 I doubt any were made (history check here ).  Between 18,325 and 21,760 M14 NM rifles were either manufactured or converted between 1962 and 1967.

US v TRW M14NM Serial # 1453711

 TRW did some interesting things back in the day....long before it was gutted by the crooks that "managed" it after the mid to late nineties.  TRW also created the first "Mini" 14.....well....it was an M14 converted over to 5.56......

Hey...we had to try recoup those M14 contract losses SOMEHOW!!!!

1453711 is reportedly 1 of 17 that were purchased in 1964 by civilians at Camp Perry.
