I work with the "armourer" or our local VFW.
So I ordered some HS, TE, and  firing pin proutrusion gauges.
As a goof I strpped my M-1's bolt and threw in the field guage.
The bolt swallowed it!
Is this Bad?  I mean really bad?
It shoots ok, Its a IHC 54, the barrell says "NM 54".
It shoots good, but i think it could be better.

Chime in  now

Did you remover the recoil spring and the follower rod?? or did you just insert the gauge and the srtipped bolt and let the action slam shut? if not.. then having the bolt close on a field gauge is not too good... but if the rifle is just fot firing blanks.. headspace doesn't matter at all....

Yes, i took out the whole top end.  There was no, Repeat, No spring pressure.
The rifle i was talking about BTW is the one i use for High Power matches.  Its not the blank firing ones we use for parades/funerals.

Garand bolts vary somewhat as to length depending on the dash number.

The guys over at CSP can tell you which tend to be longer than average.

I would look to this to correct HS before pulling the barrel off.

csp is culver's shooting page.  It's THE place to go for garand information.  To find the site, just type in jouster in any search engine and it will come up.

I would not fire one more round out of that rifle until the headspace is corrected.  Which gages were you using?
