So now the ATF knows there are 21,765 right wing extremists looking to buy machine guns to shoot down planes and satellites.
(I signed on this petition around 2003 or so). It may never happen, but if you don't knock, you can't expect the door to be opened.... |

As much as I would like to have one, these rifles need to be put back into service where they belong. The M14 is the best battle rifle that our military has in its arsenal. I would rather them go to use as designated marksman rifles, than to personal use.

Gentlemen, Orest Michaels, CFO, at the CMP said this is a no go. Source: Board member azski who posted his e-mail correspondence on various gun boards from Mr. Michaels on this matter. This was in 2003.

As I recall from Orest's post, he also pointed out thet there were actually very few M14's still left in serviceable condition.
A lot of the M14's were given away to other countries, a lot were crunched back in the Clinton administration and quite a few suffered from improper storage to the point that they were just rusted hunks of steel. He basically stated that the public would be astounded at how few there actually are. The M14 was also never produced in the numbers like the Garand and Carbine either. |

I don't know where you came up with that number, it certainly was not from me. I am just recalling what Orest Michaels, who has seen them and definately knows the numbers of *serviceable* rifles said. I forgot to mention that quite a few have been sold to police departments across the country and a certain number are/would still have to be held in govt. arsenals as some branches of the service do still use them. He just said by the time you factor ALL of these examples in, there are just not that many that would be available for sale through the CMP. The way he left it was that a lot of people have wild eyed expectations that just are not there when it comes to reality with the M14's. FWIW. |

I've researched the destruction and export of USGI M14 rifles. I cannot find a Presidential Executive Order that discusses "demilitarization" of DOD small arms. It may exist but as far as I can figure out, it was a decision made at the Secretary of Defense or Secretary of Army level (in 1993?). FWIW
Yes, over 450,000 USGI M14 rifles have been transferred to more than two dozen countries beginning in 1973 and continuing until at least 1998. The destruction began as early as 1970 by destroying 250 Army ROTC unit M14 rifles at Loyola University (IL). In 1993 and 1994, over 497,000 + M14 rifles were destroyed alone. IIRC, according to Scott Duff (and he does his homework), about 750,000 M14 rifles had been destroyed by the time he published his book on the M14 in 1996. Coincidentally, that's when the destruction stopped. I discuss this topic in my book M14 Rifle History and Development. IMHO, this matter of destroying and exporting USGI M14 rifles makes civlian production of M14 type rifles all the more important. |
