So two basic questions I have about the M1A are

1: What is the difference between M1A and M14? is it just the select fire switch?

2: Where did the M1A designation come from? was it based (loosely) on the M1 Garand?

m1a was the name made up by springfield armory to sell the semi auto clone of the m14.

The difference is that a M14 is USGI issue machine gun and the m1a is from springfield armory and from the get go semi auto. Other names that semi auto m14 clones go by are M14s.

ok so its not like the M1A was the name of the rifle platform (like AR15) and then the military designated it an M14 (like the M16)? The M1A came afterwards just so they could sell new rifles to the general public?

Commercial semi-automatic only M14 type rifles first became available to the public in 1971. The first USGI M14 rifles were assembled in 1959 and government contract production ended in 1964.

correct. Keep in mind that Springfield Armory was a US Govt armory, and Springfield Armory Inc. is a private industry gun manufacturer. Not the same thing at all.
