I was looking at the ebay online gun show segment when I stumbled across this:

Rifle conversion kit - shoot 7.62x39mm in a .30-06

No real explanation of how this thing works, or whether you'd be able to use it on a Garand.

Looking around, they've got all kinds of weird adapters like this, shooting 22lr through a .308, .38 through a 20 gauge shotgun.... How does this work?

They are not very safe. There is always a chance that the adapter can come out while the empty case is being ejected. I would stay away from such devices.

This is nothing more than a take off on what the US govt. tried to do back in the 60's when converting to the 7.62X51 round. It did not work then and it won't work now, safely. There is soooo much more than to just popping it in and adding some loctite to it. You also end up with a very loooong throat (freebore). What usually happens is it comes out when you do not want it to and it stays in when you want it out. If you were to fire a 7.62X39 round with the adaptor out, it results in way excessive headspace. I know someone who did it with a .308 and the case comes out looking like a .45-70.

Caveat Emptor!!!!

Isn't 7.62X39 a .311 caliber

US commercial  7.62x39 is .308
foreign 7.62x39 can range anywhere from .310 - .312
