Shot about 500 rds through it without many issues. Sometimes the last shell doesn eject but comes out when I drop the mag. This doesnt bother me too much since it always occurs on the last shot and its cleared when I remove the mag. Its happened about 3 or 4 times now. Also some of the brass are ejected forward onto the barrel and once to the left of the barrel but mostly to the right. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a problem? If so what should I do to fix it?
Also I have heard a lot about replacing USGI parts especially the bolt and op rod. What should I change on the SA M1A and which brand should I get?

Try a USGI extractor, it's the only paty you need to replace.
All USGI M14 parts passed the same government inspection, there are no "premium" parts. TRW's affilliation with the aircraft industry doesn't make their parts better, just more expensive. Is the rifle cleaned and lubed per military specs? -- Chuck |

I clean and lub it well. I took the scope off it and to my supprise it shot excellent. I zeroed it in at 50 yrds and got 1inch grps with M118 and M80s open sights. Will try 100, 200 and 300 yrd opensights this week end.
 What about springfield parts? What SA parts need replacement? |

Other than the extractor the SA commercial reproduction parts are fine. SA bolt is forged but the extractor seems to be a casting and a weak part. It's the only part that's needed replacement on my all SA-parts "Bush" Rifle -- and it didn't survive 500 rounds! I'll admit, though, that since I had a spare HRA bolt in the range bag I just swapped bolts and the HRA bolt remains in the rifle. The SA bolt, now with a M14 extractor is the range bag spare.
If you can find a USGI bolt at a reasonable price pick one up. Pick up 2 or 3 M14 extractors regardless. My other rifle is all USGI other than the SA receiver. No parts problems there either. If you have a good 50 yard zero move the sight up two clicks and then loosen and move just the range index wheel so 2 (200) is at the line. Retighten the wheel and you should have a very flat battlesight zero out to 200 yards. You'll be about 2-1/4" high at 100 yards. Just aim center of mass from any range from the muzzle to 250 yards. -- Chuck |
