Curious as to what kind of 100yd groups do you guys with Standard M1A's that are scoped get? Tell what ammo was used to to get the group.

I've got a standard M1A. It was later bedded in the cheap fiberglass stock. It so far shoots around 2MOA (2in @100yds) with Fed 168 Match or 175's. This is with standard iron sights and a factory trigger. There are no upgraded or NM parts installed yet.

*** I want to see if the scope could cut that 2inches in half? WITH OUT NM UPGRADES AND $$$***

< 1 MOA @ 300 yards with three different loads using 155 grain Sierra Palma Match, 168 grain SMK's and 175 grain SMK's.  These are all hand loads using either IMR 4064 or Hodgdon Varget.

Fox how many grains of varget are you using with those three bullets? I'm working up some loads with the 168 and 175 SMK's myself and wondering what others are doing.

Sounds like just what I wanted to hear!

That was with a Standard M1A with the regular GI barrel?
How many grains of Varget?

Thanks for the info!

IIRC, according to SA's own web-site, the standard M1A has 1/12 twist barrel, standard "loaded" M1A has 1/11 twist barrel and the "match" M1A has 1/10 twist barrel believe it would be best if poster's listed the twist rate of their barrels.

This could have a great bearing on your question as most box stock "standard" 1/12 twist M1As won't shoot MOA at a 100 yards, without mods, even with GM 168 SMKs.

Well Said.

Please post your barrel type Gents. If you don't know the rate of twist just list what model M1A you have, ex:
Standard
NM
Super Match

This will give me the info I need.

Thanks again to all!

mr_wilson, you are correct.  I saw "bedded" and thought N.M. type rifle.  Mine is a N.M.

BuLLet - let me get back to you later.  I am not at home and do not remember the exact loadings and this is something I will not guess at.  I can tell you that I use only unfired military brass purchased from www.gibrass.com.  I am meticulous about case preparation - especially where primer pocket depth is concerned and I never load M1A brass more than four times, less if it is the least bit questionable.  I have used both CCI 200 and Federal 210M primers with good results.

All M1A shooter's results are welcome. That will give me even more info to base my test on.
Just state which M1A rifle type you used for the accuracy results you post.

Standard M1A that was bedded

Thanks again all!

BuLLet - I am using 44.0 grains of IMR 4064 behind a 155 grain Sierra Palma Match.  The loads chronograph at 2,717 fps out of my rifle on an Oehler 35p.  The 168 and 175 grain loads are in front of 44.5 grains of Varget.  My notes indicate 2,630 fps for both loads.

The ten ring on the 600 yard reduced to 100 target is about 1.5 inches.

I can hold the ten ring with 5 shots with the iron sights from prone on a good day with Port or SA ammo.

Mine is the standard with a GI fiberglass stock with a tight gas cylinder.

I just got my M1A back from GA Precision where I hadt a Mike Rock Barrel and a new McMillian M3A stock bedded to the reciever. Let me tell you I shot the the X ring out. Then I shot at a Ace of Hearts card and I put one through the center. My groupings were about one inch apart at 100 yards. If you want I will send a picture of it. I used a US optics ST10  scope mounted on the new ARMS 18 mount with GG&G rings. To be honest I am not a good shooter but that day I was. Oh! I used American Eagle 150 grain and National Match 168.

I had posted a range report a while back, with my Standard M1A (with USGI barrel).  I shot 175 gr GMM (Federal) and 168 gr Nosler Match (Winchester), and at 100 yds, the tightest group of 5 was 1.5".  The 168 was better, around an 1".

I'll try again this weekend, and will see what I shoot next.  The rifle has only 284 rounds through it, and is walnut stocked, with ARMS 18, Mk 4 rings, and Leupold M8 6x42mm.

OK it's looking like 1.5 inches @100yds is the average. My best group was 1.75inches but averages 2inches.

Ok keep em coming. Need more scoped Standard rifle reports similar to Z's.

Thanks all!

This was shot late last year from sand bags.  For those that do not recognize the name, IVI is Canadian NATO brass.

You guys are missing something, a scope won't, or shouldn't, help you at all at 100 yards. Certainly if you are testing the rifle. Use a rest, front & rear, or sand bags and shoot a group. When you can shoot a group with irons that's damn close to the groups off of rests then use a scope to extend your range to 300, 600 and beyond. The scope is for the shooter, not the rifle.

Practice, practice. practice

right, right.

I don't think my rifle can do any better with a scope. Irons at 100yds = 1.75in is all I think she's possible of. Maybe smaller (NM) sights will help me be a little more consistant in getting the same sight alignment and sight picture each and every shot. But I'm doing pretty good at letting the trigger break when the sights are the same each shot.

I think the 1.5 to 2inch at 100yds is the norm for the standard M1A rifle. I was just curious to see if the same rifle scoped was doing better.

Not so. So far.

Thanks all! Keep em coming.

Here is my NM M1A
With my own loaded ammo. I have achieved .5moa 3 shot groups.  With Federal Match the best I have achieved is .8moa

I have the Springfield Super Match with the SA 6-20x56. I shot a 1.1" 5 shot group at 200 yds with my old eyes using GM 168g bthp. I am a mediocre shot at best. my 02
