I've got an M-14 gestating at my gunsmith's shop...I was considering putting an aimpoint or reflex sight on it via an ARMS mount...could someone who has this set-up post some photos so I can get an idea how it would look? Milli Grazie!

Buy an extra handguard and the Springfield "scout squad" forward mount.  An Aimpoint will mount over the barrel very nicely.

You'll have to notch the handguard unless Springfield has some brown versions.

My M1A with an EO-Tech 552 mounted on a Smith Enterprise Tactical Scope Mount:

Close-up of EO-Tech & Smith Enterprise Mount:

I originally tried mounting the EO-Tech using an A.R.M.S. #18 M14/M1A Mount Base & a #19 Throw Lever mount. The EO-Tech sits too low on the #19 and hits the throw levers. Soooo...I parted with all that mounting hardware & got the Smith Enterprise mount. I've been pretty darned happy with it. It has a channel that runs underneath the EO-Tech so that I can use the iron sights without having to remove the EO-Tech. Ignore the Harris Bipod, it normally resides on my bolt-gun, but I had it on the M1A for shooting from a bench. The improvised cheek rest was made by taking an old mouse pad, cutting it in half and gluing the two pieces together in a stack. I then taped it to the stock using some black cloth tape that I had laying around.

If you've got any other questions, I'll be happy to try to answer them.

P.S.- I went with the EO-Tech 552 because it was the best(and only?) sight available at the time that used commonly available "AA" batteries.

Thanks Sarge!

I "assume" that a CQB type optic on an M-14 is not really effected by height and cheekweld issues, right?

Well, actually, the whole mount & sight set-up is a bit too high without using a cheekpiece. My "Low Rent" answer is only temporary. It still isn't quite high enough. I am planning on putting a Blackhawk cheekpiece on it in the near future.

Ahhhh, the joys of getting the bugs worked out of a new set-up...[:D]

StormSurge,

Here are some photos with an Aimpoint and an EOTech.  These aren't my photos (I'm not taking credit for them - they were just saved on my hard drive when I ran across them awhile ago).  I believe they came from some members on the Battlerifles forum.

The bottom two are of my M1A with an EO-Tech 552. I posted those pictures on a couple of different boards...

I must say that I like the looks of the Aimpoint set-up on the pictures above mine, also.

Just watch BHD. Nice M-14 with camo stock and Aimpoint setup...

Will it work O.K. if mounted further rearward??

What brand of mount is that?  I am looking at putting a Aimpoint M2-2X on my M1A and want a mount that sits as low as possible.

Engineer,  at what range did you sight it in, and can you offer any insight as to changes in POI at different ranges?  Im considering this set up for my pre-ban.

Lumpy, sorry, but those aren't my pictures or my rifles (see my first post).  I just have a 3-9x40 scope on my M1A and the red dot on my AR's.  Hopefully sgtstinger can chime in with that info.

Im doing this right now. The best setup I have found that is not the SA scout rail is the ARMS18 with the KAC low mount. The KAC puts the sight a little more forward. I have contemplated the #18 with the Aimpoint Ring. Not the rail grabber.

I always wonder about "show me. . . " type questions, StormSurge.

Maybe you can help me to understand: why is the appearance of a sight on a rifle an issue to you?  How will this affect your appreciation for how the system will function, or for how it will improve your ability to hit a target?

Is this another example of a "Barbie Doll" mentality?

I sure don't mean to seem abrasive, but this is really a mystery, and before I jump to conclusions, I'd sure like to hear the rationale.

Help me out!

IMHO

Here, I will help you. He may want to see what they look like and what people have to get an idea of what he is going to buy. Some people wnt to see the things also. I never thought to put a red dot on a M1A untill I saw BHD. It also keeps me from having to ask it. After seeing the pictures I was able to figure that I want an ARMS #18 and a KAC low mount.

Now you can help me I hope. What is "barbie doll" mentality. Never heard the phrase before.
