So, I sold my DD MK18 CQBR upper because I was bored of it. It seems all the cool kids have one, and I want to be more of a hipster with my rifles.

In all seriousness, I just wasn't a huge fan of the quad rail thing.  Great upper, loved the way it shoots, just didn't feel right in my hands.  I want something a little more streamlined.

I'm considering a URX3.1 and an 11.5" barrel, or a Geissele (undecided on model).  I am also seriously considering a 7.62x39 upper.  I already have several 5.56 SBRs and an AK and have plenty of x39.  I don't want to add another caliber, so 300 BLK is out.   The only thing making me hesitant about x39 is having to add new magazines to the armory, and I have no idea how reliable the x39 is in the AR platform. I've read mixed reviews.

Thoughts? Ideas? Sources for URX or Geissele rails? Alternatives?

This will be mostly for range use, and of course Mutant Zombie Bikers.

Thanks.

12.5"" barrel with a 12" ALG EMR rail.  Super slim and is very comfortable.  Works even better if you have a Silencerco Saker.

This used to be a CQBR upper.

Interesting. Why the riser? Cheek weld?

I see...DBAL?

Cheek weld/more comfortable "heads up" position for one.  It also allows me to use head mounted NODs through the Aimpoint should I want to.

Also, yes, DBAL-A3.

11.5" 6.8 spc is what I'd recommend, more fps than 300 blk and shoots same weight bullet. The Bison Armory 1:7 twist is also capable of shooting subs, I'll never shoot them with mine but it's very accurate with any ammo that's readily available.

Mk18 or CQBR?

Which was it?

Whichever one it was, I'd build the other next.

urx 3.1 and an 11.5" barrel is a great combo.  if your looking for something a bit slimmer maybe take a look at the urx 4.  the geissele rails are nice also , i don't think you can go wrong with any of them

urx 3.1 and 11.5

Why did you sell the whole upper? You could have replaced the quad rail with

You would likely not be disappointed with an SLR handguard.

I was having a hard time deciding between that and a Geissele, but the lengths available for SLR rails made it easier.

No regrets.

because they demand a premium since it was a factory upper.  I can build a new one just as good for half the price or less.

Why not .300 BLK? I'll tell you that I rarely shoot 5.56 SBRs anymore because suppressed .300 BLK SBRs spitting subs is what I always dreamed the NFA world was like. It excels at being quiet and short which means it's a ton of fun. A barrel change is all that is different from your standard gear and ammo is becoming more widely available/affordable every day.

And it's what I've decided on.

I have a URX 3.1 and 11.5 barrel on the way.  My lower is almost the same as well, except it's an LMT with an FDE Ergo Overmolded grip.

Now I just need to decide on a muzzle device. I love the look of the brake, but on a shorty it would be brutal and I don't have a can yet.  I even ordered the tan panel kit.  Thanks for the inspiration 1iviper.

ChandlerKJ  --- thanks man

BrowardMason --- the midlength urx and an 11.5" barrel go together like peanut butter and jelly , it makes a great handling combo.  the brake can be a bit concussive if your not the shooter , anyone to the side of you will not be amused.  an aac blackout or a vortex flash hider does a good job of keeping the flash down on short barrels.

drop a binary type trigger in it and you can clear the firing line in a hurry

Lol. But I was thinking the same thing.

did you read my post? lol. sold my factory DD MK18 Upper. liked it ,  but didn't love it. i know its what all the cool kids want/have, but I'm just not a fan of the cheese grater quad rail anymore.

I also still have a MOD 0 and a 7.5 PDW.

I'm sure the next version of the MK18 will be around shortly

Oh, I know. That's why I thought his post was funny. You said that you just sold your MK18, what should you get? I wondered when people would start to answer MK18. I love the MK18 so I kept thinking of posting that, but it's tech forum and all that.

Seriously though, if you're down on quad rails, I'd do a 10.3 but with one of the SLR rails of your choice. I can't remember the names of all their rails but I love the one that's smooth a 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, and just has a small pic section at 12. I think they have some rails in the 9.5-9.75" range that would be great for getting close to a suppressor. I see you've already made a choice, so all this may be moot anyway.

I still like the MK18 over the rest of my SBR uppers.
Maybe it's because bolting rails to mount rail stuff is stupid or maybe it's because buying new mounts to mount stuff is stupid or maybe it's because skinny rails are like skinny jeans and stupid.<img src=http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/smiley_smartass.gif border=0 align=middle>

In all seriousness, skinny rails are OK but they do get hot quick.

Edit: Forgot to mention rail covers are stupid too

I also sold a Block II CQBR upper in favor of something new. I tried out a 12.5 for a while, but came back to a shorter set up.

10.5" with a 9.5" Mk8.

I'm in a very similar predicament. I think I'm gonna go 10.75 URX 4 and cut down one of my colt barrels to 11.5". Then either use and RC2 or Specwar K.

Still would love to see more "inspiration".

11.5" with URX4 is cool. I like mine (KAC upper, homegrown lower)

Ah! Thank you. Either it's not very intuitive or I'm an idiot. Gonna go with the former.

I sold mine a few days ago as well. The replacement will be a BCM 300BLK 9". I hunt hogs, and a 9" 300 BLK is far superior to a 10.3" 5.56 for killing stuff.
