I have an AR SBR currently with a 8" .300 BLK upper.  I'd like to build another caliber upper that I can play with at the range without scouring for brass to pick up and worrying about reloading.  Ammo I can buy by the case and fire away without feeling bad about no reloading it.  I was thinking 9mm, but I'm worried about having to change buffers and putting in a mag block.  What about a .22lr conversion?  Will that work on a stock lower?  Maybe 7.62x39?  Or do a .223?  I have a 7.62-SDN-6 and a Sparrow .22 suppressor.

Thanks.

My 7.62x39 has been incredibly fun.  Giant fireballs, huge concussion.  I think it's my most fun SBR.

It's the middle one in this picture:

I'm reading up on the 4" .22lr uppers now.  I might build my own.  I have an extra upper receiver as well as a 7" DD Omega rail.  What do I need?  A bolt, mags, barrel?

As to the 7.62x39 upper- can I use a standard AR upper receiver?  Then a 7.62x39 bolt/barrel and gas system?

For 7.62x39 you need a bolt, barrel and magazine.  All the other parts are standard.  Enhanced firing pins and XP hammer springs are commonly used as combloc ammunition tends to have very hard primers.

For a sweet .22lr upper...

I'm looking at using my existing spare upper receiver.

Beyer 4.5" barrel
CMMG bolt assembly
Better-mag conversion to utilize my existing M&P 15-22 mags

Do I need some kind of breech adaptor for the CMMG to work on the Beyer barrel?

Then bolt on my Omega rail and screw in my sparrow and should be good to go for under $400...

To use the beyer barrel all you need is the dedicated 22 collar, my beyer is very accurate I think you will be happy

Thanks, I'm ordering the 4.75" beyer.  He said if I buy the CMMG "bolt carrier group" and not the "conversion bolt" it'll have the collar and not the chamber adaptor.  Sweet!  Another upper to build.

Thats what I did. I have the exact upper in 5.56. Since I reload 5.56, its only $.10/rd . 5.45x39 seems to still be decently cheap, around 180/1k for factory new steel cased. Make a 5.45 upper.

The Beyer is $200 with shipping.  I didn't know CMMG had a 4.5" barrel until just this minute.  Here's the barrel and bolt assembly for $299.   http://www.cmmginc.com/product_p/22d5b6e.htm
Maybe I just do that into my extra upper and save some money?  This is going to be a plinker, not target gun, so what do I loose going with a CMMG vs a Beyer barrel for half the cost?

I haven't read any reviews yet on them, but Palmetto has a 7" barreled 7.62x39 upper on their site ready to go for $450 right now at the link below.  All you need are mags and you can slap it on your lower and go.

Probably won't lose much, cmmg didn't have that barrel yet when I got the 4.75 or I might have ordered it. I am happy with my Beyer though

I just built a 22LR upper with 4.5" CMMG barrel , I had the adapter bolt so I just ordered the collar with it.  I have been playing with it and it is silly fun.   Still waiting on my stamp for my GM22.  When it arrives I doubt I will be shooting much else.
