Mosin sporter scout

Decided I wanted to play with a Mosin. basically take a rusted mosin and make it a functional woods gun. maybe even make it pretty.

after reading this report I decided that 2500 fps was good enough. so I cut and crowned the barrel at 16.5". (GAAASSSPPP).

I placed it in a Boyds Prairie Hunter stock in their walnut finish. I made a turned down bolt handle and notched the stock for clearance.

next up I'll be adding a ghost ring reciever sight and a banded front sight.

then I'll do a very slight recontour on the barrel to get rid of the pitting, then refinish the barrel. I'll be threading it for a flash hider to tame what I assume will be a massive fireball.

I'll finish it off with a nice bedding job on the action.

Nice work.

I can't help but notice the recoil pad is really thin. Your shoulder is going to complain.

you're right. I have a 1" thick grind to fit pad that can go on. the 1/2" one is just what comes with the stock.

I don't think so. I really like the proportions. It balances well, and carrys well so far. I can always do that later.

but was she a shooter prior ? From what I understand you have to find a nice one...or you'll be running down a reload combo to suit the barrel ?

that will be the life of the evening range shoot as is....

I like the idea, but the architecture is out of whack. The barrel needs to be about 2 inches longer, or now that you're stuck, the stock needs to be shorter, probably by 2 inches or just a little more. After a butt pad is added the gun will appear to be butt end heavy even if it handles okay.

I would have stained the stock several shades darker, too, plus added a red background, but that's just my personal preference.

Here's a Martini stock I reworked as I couldn't tolerate the gun when it showed up-

I've knocked the shine back slightly since that photo was shot. The stain is Minwax, the finish is about 15 very thin applications of 25% Tru Oil with turpentine, rubbed out between coats to make certain there is no cloudiness in the finish. I fooled around with the stock so long that it started to pick up dings just from handling. My next stock for a target or utility rifle will probably get about 3 or 4 coats of Minwax polyurethane from an aerosol can, rubbed in with each application.

like I said, I like the proportions. just personal preference, so no big deal. the LOP is spot on, so if I add a thicker butt pad I will be shortenning the stock as well.

the stock came with the faux walnut finish. it is some kind of blonde hardwood. as it is, the notch under the bolt handle needs refinished. once the rest of the work on the gun is finished I may strip and refinish the stock. in that case I may try my hand at checkering.

finished the crown, threading and almost ready to mount the front sight.

the front sight is a repro sight from a Springfield 1903.

this barrel is contoured waaaayyy off center. Like .035" off center. my threads and sight are on the bore center, but it was pretty funny seeing the interrupted cuts when I started.

I have thought of doing something similar, chop barrel to 18" or so, scout scope mount, but I didn't plan on going through the hassle of installing a new front sight.

What are you going to run for a muzzle device/flash suppressor?

My own work at polishing a turd.

All that work and I still had a clunky rifle! All kidding aside, I learned a lot and gained lots of experience from the project.

Looks decent, should help balance the profile with the length. I suspect you will have to open those grooves though, they will get backed quick.

I doubt I'll have to open them up much. I have made similar devises with much narrower slots that have went 5000+ rounds without any sign of clogging.

I should be test firing it this weekend. pretty excided. finally got the front sight on. it fits very well. I think the 1903 sight was a good decision. I was concerned that the comb of the stock was too high, but the williams rear sight and the springfield front sight proved to be just about a perfect match. I am not sure fi I like the blade front sight with the ghost ring rear. I may have to make a bead front to fit. not a real big deal and I can do that later.

Shot it for the first time this weekend. it is very tame and easy to shoot. Not only does it put a huge smile on your face, it is very functional. feeding and function were flawless. I didn't get a chance to shoot any groups, just a quick function check. the concussion from the brake was manageable standing beside the shooter. recoil was very soft both from the bench and standing. flash was smaller than expected, though still noticeable on a very overcast day. I'm sure it will be pretty demonstrative at dusk or at night. the gun snobs at the range were very standoffish, if it weren't so sad it would have been funny.

overall I'm very happy with my initial impressions. accuracy testing will come at a later date.

I have a new one sitting in the box for the last 4 years.

Been wanting to do the same to mine.

Thinking about cutting it down to 18.75 or so and adding a flash suppresser.
How did you thread the barrel?

http://www.kickeezproducts.com/templates.php I found one that fits Boyds stocks perfectly, I don't remember the model number. This is a photo of my M44 before installing the recoil pad. I cut the barrel back and recrowned it, and silver soldered the brake and front sight on.
