A question for the Hive. A friend of mine is willing to sell me a virtually new in box Browning 1886 centennial in .45-70 for $1,100 bucks. Its got maybe 20 rounds through it. Should I go for it?

No.  That's almost criminal. Give me his name and address so I can buy it myself, and prevent someone else from being taken advantage of.  Now and then, I'm willing to take one for the team like that.

If I had the scratch I would jump on that, if not I would be looking for something to trade/sale to get the cash for it.
