Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Zeroing diopter sights

The manual for my 556 Classic doesn't reflect my rifle, and has no directions for zeroing the diopter sight.  
Any advice on a zero (as regards sight adjustment method and distance)?
Also, my front handguards have so far resisted my efforts to remove them.  They are the smooth ones.
