Good day all.

Got a killer deal and never tried this particular powder before.

Hoping to run it in .308WIN but Alliant has .243WIN but nothing for .308WIN.

Hodgdon's 2019 powder chart puts Alliant's 400-MR in between Winchester 760 at # 118 and Vihtavuori's N540 at #116.

Hodgdon's load data for Win 760 in .308WIN begins with the lightest bullet a 155gr Sierra match bullet and tops-out with a 200gr SP.

Vihtavuori's load data for their N540 begins with a 140gr PSP bullet and tops-out with a 220gr Sako bullet.

Anybody tried it .308WIN?

Have a few other cartridges that Alliant does provide data for but really curious about the 4000-MR in .308WIN.

Thank you.

Unfortunately I don’t think that’s a great powder for your intended cartridge.  2000-MR is gold in .308.  4000-MR will work best in 30-06, Win Mag, RUM etc

Thanks for the reply.

google-fu came up weak with any information at all on 4000-MR and .308WIN.

A few notes on .243WIN but zip on .308WIN.

Interesting find during research reading an Alliant Engineer interacting in a thread discussing various powders and cartridges and the Alliant Engineer actually encouraged experimenting

with completely untested recipes. This was back in 2013 when people were looking to mix-n-match older RL-XX powders with the newly rolled-out Alliant powders.

Also found that Speer tested Alliant's 4000-MR powder in the 6.5 Creedmore cartridge. Thought the 6.5CRM was basically a necked-down .308WIN.

How long is the barrel and what is the twist rate?

The Ramshot burn rate chart shows 4000-MR as slower than Reloader-22, a magnum powder.

It would physically work and might even be decent in a longer barrel with a heavier bullet.  For example, a 190 SMK or a 210 gr Berger in a 26" to 30" barrel.  These bullets need a 1/10 twist.

I do like Western (Ramshot) powder comparison chart and find it quite useful.

The older thread I found last night before turning-in had reloaders picking the Alliant engineer's head looking for pressure data on the then new 4000-MR and several reloaders all came to a loose

consensus that had 4000-MR coming right in between RL-19 and RL-17 with several strongly comparing 4000-MR to RL-17 in most aspects.

Now if Alliant can test 6.5CRM with 140gr boat-tail bullets with RL-16 powder and Speer can test 6.5CRM with 140gr boat-tail bullets with 4000-MR I'm wondering if the between RL-19 and RL-17

observation has validity.

Only way to find out is to run a few loads over the chrony.
