Interesting.

I was looking at making some up from .30 Carbine brass.

I have a basic lathe though.

I tried the 30 carbine route, too.  It took a lot of work, and I had a large fraction of reject cases.

32 revolver brass is plentiful and cheap, and the finished cases look MUCH better.

If you have a lathe you're better off using the revolver brass. All you have to do is trim to length, turn off the rim, add the groove.

With the .30 Carbine you're going to have to reduce OD, deepen the groove, cut to length, and ream the interior.

Good to know, thanks.

Just a small update. I thought I might try some of the little Speer 100gr half-jacket bullets. They're .308", and the nominal bullet diameter is .309". Normally, with something like - well, anything - a bullet being .001" undersized wouldn't be an issue. But I COULD NOT get the Plinkers to stay put in the case. Even heavily crimping them, they could still move under finger pressure.

I am wondering if the .32 revolver brass isn't really thick enough to hold the .308" (and probably .309" for that matter) bullets. Both .32 ACP and dedicated 7.65 Longue dies size the case down to below .330" (nominal loaded diameter is .335") but I guess that just ins't enough.

Strangely, .30 Carbine bullets do seem to grip fairly well - but they do have more bearing surface within the case, too.

Perhaps sticking with the .312" .32 ACP bullets is the way to go.

ETA:

Also, the 1935A is a joy to shoot. It shoots like a laser, with extremely mild recoil and virtually zero muzzle flip. The gun is extremely svelte (it makes a Tokarev seem bulky!) and it appears quite accurate.

Does your pistol resemble this example?

Yes, it is a 1935A, predecessor to the Sig P210.

Thanks.

OP - I don’t want to inadvertently violate any forum rules,  but can I suggest cross-posting your original post in the C&R thread too?

I sense there are many ammo-related posts in that sub-forum;  maybe there are other Arfcomers willing to help out? Or just learn from this interesting thread.

Okay so this is freaking huge....

...Starline listed 7.65 Longue brass on backorder a few days ago.

I did not expect that.  I wonder if the interest demonstrated with these reloading threads made the difference?  Manufacturers seem to gage sales potential on internet feedback like this.

I better wait a month before ordering some anyways.  I used up all my good will at home ordering a 308 parts kit.

BTW, Midway has 71 grain Remington bullets on closeout.  Finally, in stock somewhere, and it is a closeout...

Does anyone know if Hornady makes custom shell plates, and if so what they run?

I'd really like to crank these out on my LNL AP rather than my Lee Turret.

Using graf's shell holder chart the 7.65 MAS (which I assume is the same as the french long?) shows a Hornady shell holder part number of #3 which is listed as a 22 hornet which has a rim diameter of .350 (7.65 FL is .336" but that will be below the plate) the more important diameter is the base diameter which is .298" for the 22 hornet.

So Mic a case at the extractor relief and if it's .298" or a touch smaller you have pretty good odds of it working.....

Midway has 1 left on sale https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1012995394

If you decide to give it a test drive please report back your findings as I too have a LnL and I plan on sleeving a barrel for my glock 17 one day to make a modern high pressure 7.65 FL

I would buy .327 Federal brass (which operates at 45k psi) then turn off the rim/cut an extractor groove.

I made a dummy and have played with it in QL and performance looks quite impressive. capacity should go up a few rounds too. i'm guessing about 20 rounds in the 17 round mag maybe more... haven't made more than the 1 dummy yet. I'm sure it would require bending the feed lips.

Pictured with a 32 acp, .380 and 38 spl case (I was thinking of trying it in a pocket pistol like a LCP but 45k in something so small probably isn't a good idea lol) Figured it would make for quite the impressive pocket rocket. hence the pocket pistol lineup of cartridges

The extraction groove is about .284", if the .22 Hornet is .299" at the base, how much bigger (for clearance) is the Hornady shell plate slot?

If it is .310" or bigger is probably won't work.

Midway was advertising free returns in one of the emails I got recently My bad it said "Free Shipping Returns" as in it's back

can always try it and if it doesn't pan out send it back?
The also have free shipping on orders over $49 so just add a cheap ammo box or something to bump it into the free zone and boom.

What shell holder are you currently using. maybe reverse interpolate it from there?
