Looking for a motor I can bench mount that doesn't look like it's been "redneck engineered". I also don't want/need something the size of a bench grinder.
Something similar to this would be nice, but this is too slow of rpm....

I took a Harbor Freight drill, removed the back end, and wired in a light switch. Works great, and the way I have it mounted I can easily stick on the bench and then back on the shelf when I am done. To keep the shavings contained I just cut the bottom off a small Folgers coffee container and slip it over the trimmer.
The upside is this solution is cheap and easily put together. Because it is plugin it provides constant power and RPM. Downside is it is loud as fuck.  Attached File |

For an inexpensive horizontal configuration, OIF_Vet08-09 solution looks awesome. The footprint is kinda large for cramped benches, though. I wanted a vertical shaft, so I used a Makita DA3010F right angle drill. It is variable speed up to 2400 rpm. Works great for me using a Giraud Tri-Way, and it takes up little less bench space.

Check Craigslist for a cheap motor. I found one for $10 and added a coupler and a light switch to turn the motor on. I got the coupler Here

Look for a motor that spins about 1800-2000 RPM. Ive found that getting below 1500 with the WTF causes it to not cut as clean. My drill spins up to 2300, and keep it just below full speed and that seems to be the ticket.

Why not buy one of those small table top drill presses? Mine has 5 speeds to choose from.
When you not trimming, you have a drill press to use. |

I'm just looking for something small for my reloading bench. I found this 3" bench grinder that also attaches a flex shaft and is variable fron 0-10,000 rpm. I think that as small as this is I might give it a try.

Ive tried it in a drill press and found that pushing the case vertically up into the drill press for 1000 pieces kind of sucked. Horizontally is much easier.
Will that little bench grinder have enough power to spin the trimmer while you are using it? Those little motors rely on higher RPM spinning speed and very light pressure to get work done. Edit: This would probably work pretty well, and for $7, you can afford to buy one and try it out. RPM is about right as well. Electrical motor from Surplus Center |
