Hey guys I started a thread a while back and got some good replies which I knew I would but I can't find the old thread.

I finally got to shoot my RL-15 load over the chronograph today using the 65gr Game Kings and want to know "your" opinions on the results.

This is a 1-8 16" 5.56 chamber rifle.

Average velocity right around 2750fps with an extreme spread of less than 20fps.

Accuracy is good and I've already taken a deer with it last season I'm just wondering if my velocity is good or is there more to be had?

Thank's

That's how fast I run mine from a 20" barrel. What powder charge are you using?

25.5gr RL-15

Remington commercial brass. (Weight matched)

CCI-400 primers.

Makes me curious now to see what velocity I'm getting with my 22" barrel .223 chamber Remington VTR-15. I actually developed this load in it then when I got the 16" gun only worked up to this load with emphasis on pressure.

The VTR-15 is more accurate but that's fully expected. It has free float barrel and everything.

It's easily under 2" in this 16" gun which is fine for medium size game and groundhog 200 yards and in.

This is my 65gr SGK load:  25.2GR IMR4895, CCI 41, RP BRASS, 65GR SGK, 2.26” OAL.  It's proven to be accurate in many of my rifles.

Velocities:

16" LWRC, 2727fps at 10' from the muzzle
16" Ruger American Ranch, 2841fps at 10' from the muzzle
16" IWI Tavor, 2759fps at 10' from the muzzle
16" FN CHF CMV Chrome Lined bbl, 2782fps at 10' from the muzzle

I've taken 1 deer and 1 coyote with that load.  Deer was a double lung shot.  Lead core exited the deer.  Bullet jacket was stuck in the hair at the exit hole.  Deer went about 50yd and dropped.  Coyote was a chest shot at 125yd.  Coyote DRT.

I use the imr 4895 load like the dude above me, out of my 20" barrel I am getting 2800+ and around 1" groups, took 3 bucks last year with this load, 2 of them were big, very good bullet for the 223. Have a 16" but have not tried it.

Thanks for all the information guys. I initially thought my velocity was low. Then after checking it I needed something to compare to and you guys came through again.

My friend uses the TTSX and I have seen a couple he recovered from deer that he took at longer ranges. (In the 200 yard area) They are extremely impressive some day after working through the few boxes of Sierra Game Kings I may try them.

Again thanks for the replies. You've all been a tremendous help.

So I am going to build a 20 inch 1 in 8 twist AR for hunting. Would it be unreasonable to try to get 3000 ft per second with 65 gr SGK bullets out of this rifle?

I'd say it's possible, but ragged edge.

Perhaps look at the M855A1 thread as I think a safe, accurate, 3000fps is their goal.

Find a slow powder like blc2, cfe, you'll get there.

I have a 20" 1 in 7 and my VTR-15 is a 22" 1 in 9. I will shoot my current load over the chronograph from both of them and post the results.

I have used them in these rifles in fact the load was developed using the VTR-15 but never chronographed.

I'm using Xterminator right now, and just checked the Western Powder load data.  It shows max charge of Xterminator going 2982 out of a 24" barrel.  I went to max in an 18" barrel and got 2780 with no signs of pressure.  I think I may go a little higher and see if I can get close to 2900.  Then work back up when I have the 20" built.  If this doesn't work, I think my lgs has CFE.  I'll try that.

I shot this 10 round group with that bullet today in my 14.5 BCM. Best group of the day, going to need a few more of these bullets for that barrel!  Everything else was 1-1.5". This is at 50y BTW. 4x Vortex scope just prone with mag as a monopod (as advanced as my set up permits).
