About a month ago I ran out of the Red Dot powder that I have been using for 9mm USPSA minor loads for my wife and I.  I started watching online and couldn't ever get the stars to align and get some, so I looked for an alternative.  I saw the CSB-1 powder in the where to buy thread here and after a little research decided to give it a shot.  Most of the info I could find said it was somewhere between Universal and Unique, so it seemed like it could be a useful powder for 9mm, and .45 for sure, and probably .40 S&W also.  I ordered a few 4# jugs and after a slight shipping delay on the dealers end received it last week.

From what I was able to find online, CSB-1 is the powder used in Rio shotgun shells, and Rio is going to start offering reloading components in the US sometime in 2014.

Anyways, on to the fun stuff.  My old minor load was 4.0gr. of Red Dot with a 124gr. Xtreme RN @ 1.145" and either Rem. or CCI SP primers.  This load averaged about 1050 fps and gave me a 130 power factor and pretty light recoil.  I wanted to try to get close to that again.  The data below is from shooting these loads in my full size M&P 9mm.  I also shot them out of my wifes P226 and those velocities pretty consistently ran about 50 fps. higher due to the longer barrel.  All of these loads used CCI SP primers.

Here is what the chronograph said.

The 3.8, 4.0, 4.2, 4.4 & 4.6gr. loads I loaded on my LNL AP but used my Chargemaster to measure out the powder since I only did 16 of each.  The 4.5gr. load I used the Hornady powder measure and from checking it yesterday again I think it was dropping closer to 4.6 than 4.5 most of the time.  I am going to stick with the 4.4 to 4.5 range either way and should make PF with a little room to spare that way.

I also checked my Red Dot loads as I was testing these, just to use as a baseline.

Here's  a (bad) cell phone picture showing Red Dot, Unique and CSB-1.

I've never heard of the brand, either.

Where did you get the supplies if they aren't yet importing and selling in the USA?  Do you have any business relationship with them to get the materials so early?

Nope, just a regular guy with internet and a credit card.  Check about halfway down pg. 244 of the where to find thread for the link someone else posted.  A bunch must have been imported at some point, there are some recent threads about it on some shotgun forums also.

The jug I have says "Use Universal data".

Yep, same for mine.  I got the info for universal off of Hodgdon's website and went from there.

excellent write up, pretty much the same data I worked up 4.4gr = 1050 fps in my glock long slide, 124gr plated rn 1.130" and the 4.7gr charge gave me 1155fps, I too am sticking with 4.4-4.5 thank you and thank you Lee pro 1000 powder disk thrower, 4.4 gr charge came out 9 out of 10 test charge throws, one was 4.5.  I can Not say the same about my dillion powder bar....

Local gun shop selling these in 1 lb jugs.
This is the same powder from a local ammo mfg
is using, and said gunshop is retailing.

On the side sticker it says:
"CSB-6 Maxam Powder 1 pound"

The loading guide sticker is the charges that place uses for their ammo.

Hope this helps.

A-N-D

ETA - oops, thought maybe they decided to brand it CSB-6, but after looking at Maxams website, CSB-1 and 6 are different.
Sorry about that.

^ I was gonna say, it seemed a little off. Surce I purchased mine from has a 230 gr RN with 5.8 gr @ 850 fps.

I've got a few of those loaded, and a few 200 gr LSWC at 6.0 gr. will give them a shot Saturday. Unfortunately, I do not have a chrono or access to one.

I bought some CSB-1 powder from Hi-Tech Ammo, and they enclosed a sheet with their load data on it.

And of course:  I have not tried this powder yet, I have no idea if this data is accurate or not, and use at your own risk and applying your own experience and judgment.

So? Has anyone tried this for a .223/5.56 load? I just picked up 8 lbs of CSB-1, mainly to load 12 GA with it but if I can use it for .223 and 9MM too, all the better!

I have been working with CSB-5 for a few months now and went all in with this powder. I sold my remaining supply of 700X last week and will not be using it again. I have been doing a lot of testing with it and it is a damn good powder and very clean burning. I have tested their data and found it fairly accurate but a little conservative on the bottom end. I have loaded it in 9,40 and 45 and have a friend who has worked it up in 38/357 10mm and 44 mag. I am really hoping they will take on the US market as this powder is every bit as good as US made powder.

It is a pistol shotgun powder. Not a good choice for 5.56.
