"Most popular"--I have no clue. What I do know is that there are many, many powders, both fast and slow burners, that work great in the 45 acp cartridge. A few I've used and been quite happy with include AA5, Bullseye, WSF, and Unique. Powders still present a situation where you need to keep an open mind and buy what is available and for which data are available in your caliber of choice.

I have ten pounds of #5, 8lbs of Red dot and I know I can find a recipe with the powder I have, just curious what the hive says. Am I safe in assuming that W231 is the most popular for 45? Maybe I'm over thinking it. |

I have been using Red Dot since I found it in stock recently. It's dirtier than WST and doesn't meter as well, but it works well. I'd buy more.
.45ACP has been around for so long that there are tons of loads for it. There is probably data availalbe for just about any handgun and shotgun powder you can find (which is the key nowadays). |

When I ran out of WW231 I used 700x now that I'm out of that I'm using unique, when I run out of that I'll need to figure out something else....

I like WST in my .45's.

I really don't want to get into my #5 or #7 as I use those powders the most and I don't want to have the same problem with another caliber down the road. If you can find it either True Blue or Silhouette work great in 45! Meters like water, burns clean and cool and plenty of load data out there.

The answer to your question may depend on what you can find. I like soft shooting target loads in my 45s using cast bullets, mostly 200 gr. For a 200 gr cast bullet I load 4.2 gr Clays, wonderfully comfortable to shoot and accurate for me. Tor a 230 gr cast bullet, I load 4.0 gr Clays.

I'm loading at 4.0 for a 230gr Blue Bullet. Its pleasant and functions my Glock 21 and 1911 well but I haven't put it over the chronograph yet. |

I have been shooting 5.0 grains of Bullseye in my .45s for decades. It is a great powder for the .45acp.

My IPSC load is WST. I buy it when I can and have been trying to keep no less than 8 lbs "in-stock" at any one time. I've been able to find it when I need it. It meters well and shoots reasonably clean.

I use 5.2 grains of WW-231 with 200 grain lead semi-wadcutter bullets. It's a mild target load traveling at 800 fps from my 1911. Unburned powder gets ejected with the fired case. My shooting glasses usually has specs of powder on them after extended range sessions. This phenomena has been reported by others as well.
I have favorite powders and so does everyone else. Too many people have loaded .45 acp with great success over the years I think it's impossible to pick just one as a favorite. Bullseye works great and so does Unique with lead bullets. Their are at least a dozen good powders to choose from. |

3.8g-4g of Clays 230g. The usual go to.
I have a pound of Red Dot to try. I also have 4 pounds of CFE pistol to try. I am most confident that this will be my next powder to run for a while. |

Nothing wrong with Red Dot other than its dirty - it happens to be the powder I started with. If you can find the modern Red Dot replacement, its called "E3" and is just better in every respect than RD. Clays would be my choice if you like Win. 231. BTW - 231 is fast. Whatever you choose - it should also be fast. Clays is fast. Bullseye is fast, TG is up there. ANd I also really like Solo 1000, especially for lead bullet work (burns cool, less smoke). |
