There are too many variables to be able to answer your question simply.
Beginning with 9mm, for example: 85, 100, 115, 124, or 147 grain? FMJ or JHP? Plated, Jacketed or Lead? Manufacture? Factory seconds? |

I used to buy 55 grain FMJ's for $27/1000 in the 90's.
Going price pre Sandy hook panic was around $80/1000 for .224 55gr FMJ's. I don't really pay attention to pistol bullets because I'm a bullet caster.

Grain weight does matter, because a 115gr bullet is cheaper than a 124gr bullet. If you are talking loaded factory ammo, then no, it would not matter. |

Looking back at my order from Precision Delta on 8/4/11 my 9mm were $76 for 115gr FMJ's and $84 for 124gr JHP's. I started reloading in 2010 with some initial orders from Midway and local stuff before buying in bulk from PD and other places.

the price change is not so much manufacturing cost going up...it has some but not much. The problem is the a- holes gouging because they can. People are/were in a panic for supplies and guns...get and buy all you can right now. Supply and Demand. Ya know the Yuppie with 5 AR safe queens with 40 loaded mags and 10k rounds for rifles that will never go boom. Then factor in all the doomsday preppers and god forbid the Zombies taking over.
Reloading is not for cost savings, it's for accuracy, convinence and to complete the hobby. I just dusted off my presses that have been stored for 18yrs and I can't even buy primers or powder right now. The media and Govt has mind effed this country. |

I can still load a 1000 223 for 57 dollars.... Once the cheap components run out it will be over $200....
Why didn't I buy more bullets when they where $26 a K....????? |

If not look in the EE, Craigslist, ebay, amazon, local gun store that sells lead shot. Its not that hard to find. Ask around, once people know your looking for it i have had people give me a whole bunch of it. |

But you have to get them fast and there is a 1 box limit. |

The reputable places haven't changed their prices (much) as a result of the panic. They are just having trouble getting the stuff in, like the rest of us.
When the less reputable places started gouging people, I deleted their websites. Even when this panic is over I won't be shopping with them anymore. I would like to see "someone" start a list of the websites that were openly gouging people during the panic. |

In 2009, I bought 3500 55gr FMJ's from Montana Gold for $249 shipped. Right now, they are $350 shipped for 3500.
Just give it some time. Prices will fall. My local Dunham's has thousands of rounds of 223 and 7.62x39. My local Walmart had Fed 5.56 and Tula 7.62 last night for the first time since the panic started. That is a very good sign that manufacturers are catching up. |

I remember in 2010 I paid $73/1000 for 115gr FMJ 9mm, loaded up for 10.5 cents a round. Same bullets now are $10 more.

here is a good one for ya. I recently pulled out a 30x50x30 aluminum waterproof container that held all our reload equipment from the early 90's. There was 2- 1# Bullseye containers for 9$ and 1 5# container for 20$. Whats a 5# container of anything cost now?
I think I may try a load with the old powder just to see, cause I can't find shit for new powder right now. |

In August of 12 I placed several orders. From Hi-Tech I got 3000 62gn pulls for $280 (iirc), 8lbs of pulldown WC 846 for $94, and from Wideners I bought Wolf SRM primers for $15.50/k. If my fuzzy, 6am math is correct, that is (9+1.5+4) right around $150/k for 62gn plinking rounds. Shoulda bought more powder...damnit. Taking it back a bit further, to the spring of 04, 115gn FMJ pulls from GIBrass where $40/k, primers where $.99/c IN THE STORE, and AA#2 was in the $12/lb range. My 9mm practice rounds where around $.06/each. Commercial cast projectiles where even cheaper and I shot the shit out of those.
The moral of the story is, when you find a good deal, stock up. So long as it is stored properly, bullets, powder, and even primers will last a long time. Reloaded rounds will last even longer. Hope this helps. ka |
