I origonally bought this powder, IMR 4227, for my 6.8 SPC. However, I sold this gun before I ever used very much of it since I had other more popular powders and liked them better.

Is there any data out there to use this in .223/5.56 or even .270 Winchester? If so what charges have you used?

IMR-4227 is too fast burning for 223, and is way, way too fast burning for 270.

Since it's not suitable for these cartridges, that's why you can't find any data.

I use 4227 for magnum pistol charges ie; 357, & 44. Never thought about using it for rifle loads. If you find data for 223/556, it would be interesting to see the charge weight.

I actually wondered if it would be safe to use in .40 plinker rounds with a reduced charge.

The only cartrage I've used it in was 6.8 and only for a few rounds just to try it out. I liked other powders better and never gave it another look. I just got curious about other calibers and can't find anything. In my Lyman manual it says it's for 22 hornet and other small rifle calibers and magnum handgun rounds. I was hoping small rifle calibers meant .223 but I guess they mean smaller than that. Guess I'll just have to ditch it.

Keep it, you never know when you might pick up a new gun that can use it.

Or trading stock.

There's load data for it in 7.62x39 and the 300 Blackout.

DuPont 1999 reloaders guide-223 rem -2810fps-51200 cup -Rem 7 1/2 primer-55gr Hornady spire PT Sx bullets-2.260" col -IMR4227-17.0grMaximum. The 270 win.-Rem 150gr spcl bullet -IMR 4227-29.0grMaximum. 2215 fps-51000 cup-Rem 9 1/2 primer-3.250 col. Not a good choice of powder. Use data at your own risk. Edit: > Different Component=Different Pressure.

DuPont & Steves pages both have loads for 223 rem using lighter bullets. 45gr sierra & 50gr Sierra Both Maximums are 17.5 gr of IMR 4227.
