There's a better than fair chance that the gunpowder is still good.
Put it somewhere cool, and when you're ready, open it and check for red dust mixed in the powder. If it's bad, just toss it on the lawn, it's fertilizer, too. |

This morning I loaded and shot .45acp with RedDot that is mid 1960 manufacture. It appears to shoot the same as new stuff. It was always stored in a controlled environment. This was inherited when my father past away last year. I also have some HS5 that is older and appears to be good.

I have several containers that range from 20-40 yrs old. Loaded some 38 spcl from some really old Unique (cardboard container) and some 223 from some old 4320, and both shot fine. As stated above, look for red dust and watch out for a nasty ass rotten egg smell.

Been using this old can of 2400. So far, about 500 rounds it's shot fine. Cast bullets in 7.62x39. But no red dust here, and the powder has no bad smells. Believe this can is from the 60's. |

If the powder has a fresh solvent smell and no red dust it is just fine. I have a friend that was still shooting old pre-IMR Dupont powder from the 1920s about ten years ago.

I loaded and shot a coffee can of some red dot looking powder my dad used in the 70's a year ago. Just found another can of some powder too, I dont know what it is but he only loaded 12ga with the same charge bar so I have at it. I also have about 1000 paper 12ga shells, those I probably will not use.

Years ago I picked up a can of SOLO 1000 that was in the round cardboard style container to load .45ACP. That can made over 1400 rounds of bullets and they shoot great. I have no idea of how old that can of powder was. I also have some old tins of NORMA on the shelf that is old too.
