I am going to start reloading my .223s...I want to go with RL 10X but right now I am thinking IMR...will do...have read the manuals and searched the IN...just want a little advice if anyone out there uses the IMR powder for the .223.  Will be using 55gr SPs or FMJ...will save the V-Max for the 10X.

I use 4895 for my 150gr FMJ .308 and am going to use some 4064 on some 168gr BTHPs...

any input would be great...thanks.

Mostly I use IMR 4198 it works well in loading the 7.62X39 as well

8208XBR for 75gr HPBT

I used to use IMR 3031 because of it's availability.  The other powders would be sold out, but there were always 3 or 4 cans of 3031 with a layer of dust on them.  Didn't know if it was a regional thing, or if was overlooked by reloaders everywhere.  I've used it in .223, .308 and 7.62x39 with good results.

Best IMR for .223? IMR3031 is what I like.

Right now I'm playing with H335 for it though.

Other than the XMR-8028, IMR powders are just too course grained for best performance in .223. H4895 would be my pick for .223 because it's smaller than the IMR brand's kernels.

IMR's powders shine in .30 caliber service rifles, not so much in .223.

I used to use IMR 4895 for .223 and it shot very well for me but I've only loaded 55 grain bullets. But I'm sure if it works well with other bullet weights.

+1 for multiple bullet weights.

I've used it for 55, 60, 65, 69, 70, and 77gn bullets.

I've used many pounds of IMR4895 in .223 for my AR with great success.

IMR3031 is too long to go through my measure with any consistency.  I still have it, but rarely use it in anything.



I have recently switched to TAC though, and am happy with results so far.  And it meters like a dream!

And it's usually cheaper to boot.

IMR Powders for 223 with 55 grain bullets I would use 4198.  I have had good luck with this powder with bullet weights from 40-60 grains.  I'm sure IMR 4895 is excellent but I use H4895 instead(different charge weights not interchangeable) because I like the small extruded kernals.  IMR 4064 is still a very good powder despite the fact that Varget and XBR 8208 are surpassing it ballistically and are better rated for extreme temperature swings.  I have yet to use the XBR 8208 but if it's half as good as everyone raves about than it means only one thing- a single ragged hole in the target and the tighest groups so long as you do your part.  BTW 3031 is excellent for heavier weight 223 bulets like the 75 grain OTB, even stabilizes 75 grain OTB's in a 1:9 Twist barrel.

Going to have a long list to check....but hey...info is GOOD...it is good to know all the alternatives out there....that are in use....

I started my 223 quest with 4895 because it gives me awesome results in 70 grain 243. I have since found Varget, H335, and TAC all behave better in 52-62 grain 223 (for me).
