Have old 8 lb jug (plastic) of AA2230 that is about 20 years old. Stored in original container. SHould it still be good to use for .223 loads?
Also same thing with 1 lb can of 748.

Thanks for advice,

Wayne

Check for proper color and smell.  If it isn't discolored and smells the same as known good batch of powder it should be ok.  If it smells like cat urine your screwed.

LOL, that might be a problem. there is a cat urine smell in the basement - from cats.
Will buy a small new can, take the old one upstairs and wash the outside, then do the smell test, thanks!

Compare the color and texture too.  If it has changed colors that is also very bad.  If it is clumped up thats bad....

You may have 20# of fertilizer on your hands.

Provided the container was kept sealed tight it more than likely is fine. It forms a reddish/brown dust when it decomposes. It's smell should be much weaker now from the original solvents dissipating over time that were used when making it.

Sunlight, heat and moisture can effect powder and it's chance for long term usefullness. Avoid these and you're probably good for a long time to come.

If bad it will smell acrid, and not like any cat piss I've ever encountered.

How to tell if your powder has gone bad?

HOW TO CHECK SMOKELESS POWDER FOR DETERIORATION

Although modern smokeless powders are basically free from deterioration under proper storage conditions, safe practices require a recognition of the signs of deterioration and its possible effects.
Powder deterioration can be checked by opening the cap on the container and smelling the contents. Powder undergoing deterioration has an irritating acrid odor. (Don't confuse this with common solvent odors such as alcohol, ether and acetone.)
Check to make certain that the powder is not exposed to extreme heat as this may cause deterioration. Such exposure produces an acidity which accelerates further reaction and has been known, because of heat generated by the reaction, to cause spontaneous combustion.
Never salvage powder from old cartridges and do not attempt to blend salvaged powder with new powder. Don't accumulate old powder stocks.
The best way to dispose of deteriorated smokeless powder is to burn it out in the open at an isolated location in small shallow piles (not over 1" deep). The quantity burned in any one pile should never exceed one pound. Use an ignition train of slow burning combustible material so that the person may retreat to a safe distance before powder is ignited.

No clumping detected. Kept in a cool dark place in basement and < 40% humidity in finished basement.
thank you!

Thanks for the reply,
Haven't poured any out yet,  but it sounds loose in container. Popped the seal, looks dark and black. Will get a new can and compare colors. Just hate pouring it oout and exposing it to air.
But luckily it's 8lbs, not 20! Would still be an expensive loss.
Will check color and pour it into a clean glass container to check color and smell.
thanks!

As already said, check the powder for the signs of deterioration and you should be ok. Sounds like your storage conditions have been very good. I just finished off a 1lb can of 748 from 1994. It passed the test and it shot just fine.
