I built my first one in the 80's. I made a simple box frame with 2"x4"'s and stapled 1/4" screen to it. The kind of screen you can buy at the Farm Bureau for making rabbitt cages and the like.

I would place the screened frame over a wooden box that was slightly larger and dump the brass and media through the center. A little agitation and the rest of the media would fall through. It worked great, but not as fast as Dillon's spin handled model.

Walmart minnow trap.
You pour the brass and media in and shake it inside a trash bag.
I paid less than $5.

I made and used one for 15 years.

Two 13x11 plastic Tupperware type dishtubs. Drilled a bunch of holes in one and a couple of holes in the two sides and used long wooden dowels lengthwise so that the top tub would sit a few inches above the bottom tub. I'd pour the stuff into the top tub and would move the tandem back and forth to let the the media fall through into the bottom tub and things would capture the brass in the top tub.

I still had to shake out the brass, but it worked fine, if not a bit time intensive.

I bought a RCBS media separator last month, but haven't tried it out yet, however it should save time.

5 gallon bucket, drill holes in bottom, use handle to rotate back and forth inside the media recovery bucket. Home Depot, $3.

Works for me. I don't need fancy gear to get it done. Not to mention I needed one, had a drill and a bucket.

I just use a spaghetti colander over an aluminium turkey pan. Then I hold the top of the tumbler on the colander and flip it over and shake some more. Works great.
