The only 55 grain fmj that is likely to to put a smile on your face is Hornady's. Widener's and MidSouth Shooter's Supply usually have 6000 bullet bulk cartons from $420 + shipping to $450 with shipping. These are the most accurate fmj's available.
Virtually all the other makes suck. Probably the worst performing bullet available. These are braod statements, but backed up by 1000 of people who have fired 3" to 4" "groups" at 100 yards. Hornady's version will get you close to 1.5" groups from a premium barrel. |

I may be remembering wrong, but thought I read that Hornady's 55 FMJ had a thicker jacket & didn't fragment.

Sunday I shot my little 16 inch AR with some M193 bullets I pulled, 55 grain Sierra FB hunting bullets, and 52 grain MK's. The 55 grain bullets were propelled with a light charge of 2230C gunpowder, the 52's my standard RE-15 load. The M193's covered a target printed on a 8.5X11 inch target, although a "group" was formed near the aiming point that's maybe three inches in the dense part. The 55 grain Sierra's made a nice round 1.5 minute group, and the 52's made a group about 1 minute wide and 3/4 minute tall with two out left that I called. I've never shot M193 type ammo that looked anything like accurate, whether handload or factory. The South African we used to buy shoots about as well as the Q3131's and handloads with LC bullets. |

The Hornady's are sweet shooting, Sierra's are so-so, Winchesters are not terrible and pulled are pure unadulterated shite. I have a Colt that loves the Remingtons but they will not group well at all for my other AR15's.
I miss the days of IMI 55 FMJ's- $21/1000 and they shot very well for me. |

I found the 1980's Malaysian M193 to be remarkably accurate. Aside from that, yep. The Hornady M193 bullets are decent. They are what I use. If I had it to do again, I would have bought the 6000 softpoints over the FMJ. |

I like winchester powder and primer, but there 55FMJ's suck. Looks like peanut butter smeared on a ritz cracker Imagine these pieces of shit spinning towards the target....

I think shit would actually hold together in a spin better, and be more accurate. That being said, pulleds and winchester 55 grainers are fine for 50 yards and in, and that's it. 50 yards is actually pushing it, really. I use Wolf and pulled 55's for seven to 25 yards at carbine classes. Anything further out get's the better stuff. |

Thanks to all for recommendations for bullets. I have a good shooting load using the Hornady 55gr.f.m.j. bullets as of 2 years ago.
Perhaps I'll try a small batch of these mil spec bullets and see how they perform to satisfy my curiosity. Regards. |

If terminal performance is your primary concern then yes, the Hornady 55gr FMJ's have a thicker jacket than regular M193 bullets and presumably won't fragment as well. However, as AeroE pointed out, I still wouldn't want to get hit by one, and the odds of hitting what you're aiming at are much better when using a decent bullet like the Hornady.

I love Montana Gold 55 gr. fmj's 1-1.5 in. groups at 100 yards with 23.9grains of TAC. these are their "Seconds" I've never bought thier first's.

With ~24.6 grains of TAC and Hornady 55 grain FMJ's, I regularly get sub-1" groups (usually around 0.9") out of a standard Stag 1:9 upper as long as I'm doing my part.
Haven't tried the PRVI or Winchester, etc. Hornady is inexpensive (in bulk) and works great. |

Hornady 55gr. FMJ are much nicer than most, including my winchester pic above.
I still buy winchester when I see them on a good sale. I load them up for 25 yard multi-gun stages. |

The questions about which bullet fragments are silly. If anyone wants to know, then they need to be buying and shooting bullets. Not to mention trying to figure out how much fragmentation is enough or too much, or whether it's even a good idea as opposed to using an expanding bullet that hangs together in "flesh" (of, by the way, indeterminate depth in every single example where this question is asked). It's a fairly safe bet that two bullets of similar construction will have similar terminal performance. Whether they are sufficiently similar is a matter of degree. What does "fragment as well" mean, exactly? These firearms and ammunition are deadly against humans and other critters. "How deadly" is a strong function of how well the shooter can deliver the bullet. Relying on a bullet to perform to some unattainable standard in every possible scenario is mostly a waste of time in my opinion. |
