1.74 inches is short enough, these cases don't have long necks.  But, what you might try is setting really short cases aside, loading and shooting them anyway to see if they grow back into normal range.

If you're learning to set up a trimmer, case loss is part of the cost of school.  What I recommend is shooting for a length a little longer than the "trim to" length, partly to avoid case loss but more important to me, to eliminate the aggravation of trying to hit the exact trom to length +/- 0.000 inches; that's crazy for this application, in my most humble of opinions.
