Subject said it all, mostly.  I plan on reloading 30-06 for my Garand and also for a semi-auto 30-06.  

Both barrels are 1:10 twist.  Garand is standard length while other semi-auto is 24 inches long.  

I've committed to either IMR 4895 or IMR 4064.  I've seen loading data on both in this weight.  A former Garand competitor told me they used 4895 for the 168gr up to about 600-700 yards and then switched to 4064 for the 190gr SMK out past that range.  He used the 4064 for the 190gr because he was able to get more velocity out of it over the 4895.  I have an adjustable gas valve for my Garand so I'm not terribly worried about the problems, like bent gas rods, from using the hotter, high-velocity 4064 with the 190gr when you use the original gas valves.  

I would love to load for only 190gr, but there's so many other options for 168gr, specifically for hunting rounds.  Sierra does not recommend their 190SMK for hunting and I'm not familiar with another great, 190gr hunting tip.  I'd like to keep my projectiles the same weight to help with point of impact downrange.

Actually, I guess this could turn into a "best weight to reload for 30-06" thread also.  I'm looking for a higher weight round that I could load, one for target and one for hunting small/med game.  I would like the rounds to be the same weight and as close in the ballistic coefficient as possible so I can keep the same trajectory.  

I guess I could do the Sierra 200gr Matchking/Gameking combo.  

I know Nosler does a 168/175 grain for their competition target rounds, but only a 180gr ballistic hunting tip.  The difference at the longer ranges between the 175 and 180 grain would be noticable, I would imagine.

Any recommendations?  Maybe I should start a new thread.

Don't load the 220 inthe Garand,unless you plan on replacing the op rod often, it will bend it. Use the 165 gr bullet.

46.0 grains of IMR 4064 and 168 grain Matchkings won a LOT of highpower matches back in the day.

Either should be fine.  I use IMR 4895 with 150s and IMR 4064 with 165/168.

Noslers are excellent bullets in terms of accuracy.   Amax and Noslers(try the accubond as well).

Well, these questions were for the Garand an a 30-06 on an AR frame.  I'm trying to decide what to dedicate my time to, as far as powder and bullet weight.  I'd love to go the 200gr SMK/Gameking route, SMK for target and Gameking for hunting, but they're just so darn expensive when you're trying to stock up for the long haul.  

I think I'll probably go with 168gr.  Golden West has a nice deal on bulk 168gr tips and I could pick from a number of hunting tips available in that weight from other manufacturers.  

Good lord, do I wish I'd have stocked up on the M2 ball pull-down tips when they were available.  Or been smart and bought 15K of Greek from CMP when it was cheaper and more available.

No sense dwelling on that.  As far as powder goes, I've seen loading data for the 168gr for both 4064 and 4895.  

Is the concensus that 4064 is best for the heavier tips?  Does it make that big of a difference?  I won't be shooting the Garand over 600 yards, but I might try to do some longer plinking with the other rifle so I might reload 190gr someday.  

I love to pick one powder and stock up.  Am I overthinking this?  Are the differences really that noticable?

Use IMR-4350, RL-19, or RL-22 with 165 grain Nosler Partitions or Barnes TSX's.

Most M1 Garand reloaders use IMR or H4895,IMR4064,Varget or V V N 140.            165-168 grain bullets will probably be your best overall performers. I use H4895 because it is one of Hodgon's Extreme powders and is not very temperature sensitive. It also meters better (IMO)than IMR4064. Why not buy one pound each of 4895 and 4064? They both work well and won't be wasted.
