Hard to say without knowing which bullet and cartridge.
When we have that, someone can probably find data in the new Hornady manual. I don't have a copy close by. |

I reload the 200gr HDY XTP with OAL at 1.20" in my 4" Springfield XD. Any longer was hitting the lands and wouldnt spin freely in the chamber. Pretty accurate bullet, but doesnt open up as good as some others. FWIW I use starline brass, 7.3gr Power Pistol, and CCI300 primers. Goodluck.

Max OAL for 45 Auto is 1.275.
Does your pistol chamber hardball? Most hardball I've measured go 1.270. OP, I would not seat shorted than listed in manual. Seating depth matters in pistol rounds. Deep seating = more pressure. |

But as with any other cartridge you gotta work your loads. What works in one may blow up another vice versa. Good thing about semi autos, they let you take out the barrel and drop a round in to check and see what crams into the chamber and what doesnt, not every chamber is cut the exact same.

Hornady XTP's will not chamber at 1.275" OAL They are a different bullet than a FMJ RN. They have a sharp shoulder sticking out the case mouth. That shoulder will hit the rifling sooner than the ogjive of a FMJ RN. I would load a dummy round and progressively reduce the OAL until the bullet chambers freely. That OAL will usually be around 1.200" with this bullet or the Sierra.
If you wanna start with 1.230", that's fine, but some chambers won't accept that OAL. It's a good start, though. |
