I was watching an episode on television the other day... the Patagonia episode.  He was skinning a moose, I believe, that he just happen to "find."  Does anyone know what knife he was using to skin it?  Thanks.

I'm a big fan too.....what details do you have on Bear being a fake? Maybe I won't be a fan any longer?

Apparently, his "adventures" are filmed/skewed expressely for TV. Its as real as "reality TV". Locations are speficially scouted and prepped. He is also shadowed, advised and assisted by a "survival expert". The expert is identfied in the closing credits... He also takes breaks during filming to frequent eateries and hotels. He will film himself climbing a tree, then sleep it off in the Hilton.

While some of the stuff he does has a certain amount of real-ness and danger to it, he is t-ball compared to Survivorman's MLB. Both in terms of survival skill, amount of peril in each episode and overall knowledge. Bear is an "adventerer" not a "survivalist", he just portrays the latter on TV.

One thing that bugged me even before is his over elaborate plans. The best example I can recall right now is the "ladder" he attempted to build over a waterfall/rapids. Building a ladder is the only way to cross a waterfall? You couldn't just shimmy over on an appropriate log? We are supposed to beleive he built this ladder alone, hungry and instantly? In any event, the ladder disintegrated immediatly but the whole concept was retarted. And this is just one example...

Yes, he's not a survivalist, If you were in a survival situation, I woundn't do the stuff he does-he's dangerous. But it's fun to watch him eat nasty bugs full of GOOOOOO

depsite all that, it still makes for entertaining television.  even if i do call bullshit on quite a few things.  the ladder is a good example.

Bear is no survivorman is sure- he is ex SAS soldier- which in lamens terms means he could survive alot longer than survivorman and even sneak into his little camp and dispose of him without ever waking him up from his sleep. Plus not to mention the survivorman smacks while he eats. Anybody that can't chew with their mouth shut should have their ass removed. Just my 2 cents...

OK....In any event "Survivorman" is a dedicated bushcrafter/survivalist- which in layman's terms means it is a more practical and educational program, albeit less action-packed.

off topic....

I have only watched one or two shows of Bear Grylls and it was awful.  Now I am no survival specialist, but I am no idiot either.  One of his shows he demonstrated how to go down white water rapids by blowing air into the jacket you are wearing and making a floating devise out of it (or something like this, it has been a while since I saw it).  The scene cuts to him floating down the river and it was completely obvious that he had a life jacket on underneath.   I can't stand his show.
