Err, can us folks who aren't combat pilots get in on this?

If so, go with a fixed blade in a 5" variety. Why? Cause that is what is usually issued and if his CO is anally retentive he may not be allowed to carry something larger. Fixed blades are tougher as a rule. the Seal pup would be a good choice IMO.

Keep in mind that the issue knife has  a saw on it for cutting though the fuselage.

If money is not a big issue, a Chris Reeve Aviator would be frickin awesome.

SOG Seal Pup

I'm not a pilot, I hate planes, but its one hell of a knife.  I put 120 volts into it one time accidently cutting a live wire and I didn't get electricuted (spelling) so that may serve some purpose in a heli.
