And since you're excluding DIAS, are you also counting any conversion RR, or just M16-marked guns? How about factory full autos like the AR-15 Models 01, 02, 614, 615? The PAWS ZX-16s? The Group stainless RRs?

The list of NFA legal transferable machine guns is not public knowledge so no way to tell for sure. Also if you vaguely say m16 I would say you should count RDIAS along with RLL as well, if you exclude those the. You have to start to question the non-colt RR and different generations of colt m16s, the earlier ar15 by colt that had been either factory or aftermarket converted, etc....

What I didn't mention in that post is that ATF (which used to be a branch of the IRS) considers, and the courts have backed this, that all NFA Registrations are, in effect, tax returns. Thus, due to federal taxpayer privacy laws, they refuse to comply with Freedom of Information Act requests about the total number of items of any certain description in the NFA Registry. (The other reason they do not want to comply is that the records, particularly pre-1986, are so screwed up that they do not want to state any numbers for fear of having them thrown back in their face as inaccurate.) So all you are ever going to get is an educated guess. Mine is based on decades of research, but nevertheless it is a guess. HTH. |

And as far as M16's being outside the Registry ... of course there are!
Most are unregistered contraband; a very few are MGs that were lawfully brought back by returning GIs but which were never correctly entered into the Registry, but which nevertheless are lawfully owned M16s. Getting ATF to recognize those requires an attorney, but it can be done and has been done over the years, on very rare occasions. |
