There are lots of guns in this range around. The problem is that many are rewelds. Be careful to look at the Hartford lettering as many were cut in that area. They may have either an uneven appearance or the lettering has been removed and the area built back up to hide the cut. Believe me.....I have one here at the house that was done by John Norrell (as many were) and you cannot tell that this gun is a reweld without x-raying the lower rec.

Most of the US prop. marked guns I have seen that are not rewelds are in the 5 mil. serial range. Many of these guns were issued to gov. agencies such as nuclear power plants (pantex Amarillo, TX) etc... and they are not Vietnam battle guns, so to speak.

Tony,

I have a new toy. It is an uncut all original XM-16E1. Serial number 115,595. It is in M16A1 configuration and appears to be unaltered and all original. The gun has a chrome bolt but no chrome bore as would be expected. It has the early reciever with no fence around the mag release and all early type release pins with holes in the center. If you would like a picture or two I think I can make that happen.

I was talking today with a friend who has the colt / armalite 01, he said that he heard it was a very rare pony in civi hands, possibly only 150 made it. Anyone have any good numbers to guess at what is really out there?

There were right at 13,000 made.  Of that 8,500 went to the Air Force, 1,000 for project AGILE, a few hundred for SEAL teams and US Army testing.  So that leaves say 2,000 or so outside of DOD.

Most of the registered Model 01's I know of were updated at the factory prior to being sold.

Our 635s (which are now M16s) have serial numbers in the HT006xxx range. These were probably about 1993 manufacture.

My issued civilian LE  marked "M4 carbine" (post-86 MG, flat top) is serial number A0160xxx. This was a 2001-2002 run weapon.

I notice that Jack talks for a bit about Model 640's.

I have one coming (in transfer) sn 5096###.  Marked - COLT M16 - next to horse

It's dark black, with tear-drop forward assist, 20" with standrd flash hider.

I'm not clear on his buyer beware comment.  Does my gun have any special significance?

FWIW - I paid "market" price for it - not too high, not too low.

Thx.

Is a Colt M16A1 Carbine with the SN prefix 928 different than SN prefix 956? The only noticable difference is the finish on the 956 appears to be matching while the finish on the upper receiver of the 928 is darker than the lower receiver. Both are original Colt 653 rifles.

Thanx.

I have a M 16A2 that I purchased on a Form 4 in '87  serial 80024xx. roll  marked.  Receiver marked burst, but came to me with fa trigger group, not 3 shot burst. Anyone else have this? I actually prefer this configuration. Is it safe to assume this was done outside the factory?

Do Colt M16A1 Carbines have M16A1 grips or M16A2 grips - I have seen them with both and wondering which is proper. Secondly do Colt M16A2 Carbines have M16A1 or M16A2 lower receivers?

Thanx.

Our M16A2 carbines had A2 lowers, as did the 635s made at around the same time, about 92-93.

What Model Number is a "M16" (not A1) marked receiver with a S/N in the 5,095,000 range?  It is not a model 640.  It's a 100% Factory Colt M16 with a forward assist and a bayonet lug.

Link Posted: 1/15/2005 5:18:21 PM EDT
[#40]
Colt M16's per se do not have forward-assists, XM16E1's and M16A1's do.
A Colt 640 is a Colt M16A1 11.5" "Commando" without a forward assist.

Hope this info helps.

Here is a pic of a factory M16 serial #5,096,xxx that came from the factory with 20", A1 flash, teardrop forward assist. It is rollmarked M16 next to the prancing horse logo:

It does not have the orginal upper on it currently.

The rfle was originally transferred from Colt to a PD in 1974. According to Dennis Todd, it was a Colt contract overrun that was originally designated for the Air Force, but a few units didn't make it to the Air Force and were sold to LE around the country. The rifle has a space on the left side of the receiver for the "Property of US Gov't." markings (and presumably the GAU-5 markings).

HTH.

If it had been rollstamped with the complete property of US government bit, it probably would have said M16A1.  The USAF still has M16s, A1s, A2s, and A3s in inventory, at least according to their official documentation.  Sounds a lot like this rifle was destined to be an government M16A1, but ended up with some interesting rollstamping.  A lot of the early Colt guns had Colt AR-15 where Colt M16 appears on this gun, so at a certain point its logical to assume they dispensed with the AR-15 label, and started stamping them Colt M16, before simply dispensing with this rollstamping pattern.

See here for a reference of what I'm talking about:
Picture Removed for copyright issues...or so I'm told

Note, it would also not have been stamped GAU-5 (or GAU-5/A, A/A, A/B, or /P).  GAU-5s (and now GUU-5/Ps) are USAF carbines.

I have one of these with the staked on stock and roll marked M16 next to the ramped Horse, has the 11.5" barrel, and the tear drop forward assist.
While paper working the gun it was kicked back from NFA because in the box where it says what model the owner put M16 just as it says on the receiver, but the ATF has if listed as AR-15 on the form 1 so obviously this is a transition gun from the AR-15 designation and going with the M16 designation, so had to put AR15 back in that box, and list M16 on receiver in the addition box.

I have owned many M16's in every configuration and the one thing I have learned over the years is that there is no one that knows it all, because there has never been a concrete rule with Colt
even with the AR-15 all the way the M16's I have seen many factory configurations come in the box right from Colt, and people say thats a parts gun Colt didn't make that. It may well be true for the most part but never a hard rule you better bet on that.

Am doing up a variation guide on Colt USGI standard rifles.  So I have some notes here that I would like to submit for "peer review". Here are some serial number ranges for standard issue rifles and carbines.  Not saying that there are no other rifles in these serial number ranges, or that each serial number was used.

000101-013XXX
Not US Property marked, Colt's Model 01.  Manufactured from 1959 thru 1963 and are marked ARMALITE.  Bulk of these went to the Air Force, a few for US Govt. testing, the rest commercial guns.

18,000-39,XXX
US Property marked M16 Colt's Model 02

40,000-199,999
US Property maked M16 Colt's Model 604 & XM16E1 Colt's Model 603

500,000-899,999
US Property maked M16 Colt's Model 604 & XM16E1 Colt's Model 603 (some where around 700,000 the XM16E1 roll mark was changed to M16A1)

900,000 serial number range
US Property marked carbines

1,000,000 serial number range
US Property maked M16 Colt's Model 604 & M16A1

6,000,000 serial number range
US Property marked M16A2

7,000,000 serial number range
US Property marked FN M16A2

10,000,000 serial number range
US Property marked Colt's M16A4

W prefix, US Property marked Colt's M4/A1 Carbine

Not doing research on commercial rifles, but I have noted a few things not mentioned elsewhere:

There are a bunch of odd balls in the 014000-015XXX range.

It appears that Colt's put out a batch of rifles in the 014000-015000 range in 1965.  Unlike the rifles made in 1959-63 these have a partial lower receiver boss, and are not marked ARMALITE, and were built with parts circa 1965 (as in black furniture, non chrome bolt, etc, etc).  A few are even marked Model 01.

018000-039XXX

Mixture of US and non US Property marked Model 02's, plus some other tool room one offs, and commercial guns.

200,000 serial number range
various tool room experiments, and commercial guns, none US Property marked

300,000 serial number range
not used

400,000 serial number range
various tool room experiments, and commercial guns, none US Property marked

Any serial number range for Colt XM16-E1?  The prefix X on the M16 indicated that they were for export.
