i bought a 10.3" upper from cmmg its a medium contour barrel. Should the barrel be thicker behind the handguards or should it taper off?

Thanks for the picture and yeah thats what mine looks like. Maybe im just paranoid but I was expecting it to taper off behind the handguards.

It does. It has a little bit of taper, but not as much as a lightweight barrel. An HBAR will have no taper under the handguards (and is a heavy SOB, even in the shorty configuration).

you should be fine

the heavier weight barrel helps with accuracy and stability anyways

plus the reduction of 6+ inches takes alot of the weight off anyway
