Just received my SBR approval. Going with an 11.5" barrel. What rail length do you recommend? Should I go with 12"-13" and have a portion of the suppressor covered by the rail or should I have a 10" rail so the suppressor is not covered by the rail? I'm wondering if I have it mounted somewhat inside the rail would get hot?

Thoughts or advice? Thanks!!

Thanks for the catch on my post BigWaylon. Changed it, options are:

10" rail with suppressor exposed.....or
12"-13" rail with a portion of the suppressor covered

I recommend against a 5.56 can under a rail. It gets very hot.

I like a rail that's 1.5" shorter than the barrel. You end up with about 0.5" of barrel exposed, and it looks really nice.

I used an 11.5" barrel with an 11" rail. I like the near seamless look.

I shoot for about 1" to 1.5" difference between rail and barrel length to get a nice rail to can fit without interference.

One manufacturer's (x) length rail is not always the same as another, try and get specific specs if possible. I bought an Aero precision 12" rail that ended up being closer to 13" and had to modify my build plans because of it. I have a small portion of the suppressor inside the rail and I bought a direct thread can for this. This rifle has a dedicated can so it does not bother me. I haven't fired more than a full mag at a time but the heat hasn't bothered me yet.

Here is a comparison pic for reference. The top is a 10.3" Ballistic Advantage 300blk barrel with a Geissele 9.5" MK4 with a SiCo flash suppressor and Omega can. The bottom is a 12" Larue Stealth barrel with a direct threaded Griffin Spartan 3 and Aero Precision 12" rail that was more like 12.6-12.7". The Aero rail has a 1.8" ID so it has the room to have the can inside. Most manufacturers do not recommend running a can under a hand guard and I would not do it if it were more than what I am covering.

For reference, here is a 12" LaRue Stealth barrel and a SLR 11" Solo Ultra Lite EX M-LOK Handguard with an Omega Thread On:

Thanks all. Decided to go with a 10 or 10.5" rail to have the suppressor outside the rail. Reduce rail heat and make it more accessible. I have a Kestrel direct thread so should make it a pretty seamless look using a slimmer rail which I prefer.

Nice pics by the way, some great rifles there!
