Wondering how many of you are running a 7.62 can but shooting 556 thru it to avoid buying two seperate cans , and if so is the noise reduction comparable to that of a 556 can or reasonably close?

I do.  Lots of folks do.

The difference is about 3-5dB - barely noticeable at the human ear.

The downside isn't the noise, its the extra 2-3 inches of length.

2-3"?

M42K - 6.6"
SDN6 - 7.6"

YHM 5.56 QD Phantom - 6.875"
YHM .30cal Phantom LT - 7.625"

Surefire SOCOM556-SB - 6.2"
Surefire SOCOM762-RC - 8.4"

Of the major cans to compare, only the Surefire reaches 2" over the 5.56 counterpart.

Surefire Mini, 5"
Mini-RC, 5.2"
AAC Mini-4, 5.25"
TBAC 30BA, 9"

So for the similar noise reduction to a .30 caliber can you can use a mini can in 5.56. Or one could use a Surefire 212 instead of an SDN6 (only $100 price difference) and  you're 1.6" longer.

I really should have said 1.5-2 but I had the 30BA and AAC legacy cans in mind. The couple of extra ounces you pick up with a .30 caliber can are nothing compared with the difference in balance.

Now, throw a 762MINI in the mix at 6 inches and you have my attention.

Not an apples to apples comparison.  Full-size 5.56 to full-size .308 is more apt, hence my M42K/SDN6, Phantom 5.56/Phantom 7.62, etc.

In any case the difference is about 1.5" from full size to full size and more if you like mini cans like I do.

Point is, people should think long and hard about whether try NEED a 30 caliber can before they settle on this approach.

My 762K is longer than the .300BLK barrel it would go on.

I think he was more stating for the same DB reduction of a 5.56 can vs 5.56 through a 7.62 can, you can get away with the Mini sizes in regards to them being the same db level.
